Thinking about my could-be-about-to-die G68 which I only use for making MRC measurements...

Is there anything else out there which will ***just*** calculate notch filters for a given RT60 target?

I'm not interesting in anything Dirac-y, Acourate-y, etc. Just something which will mimic what Meridian does.

Can REW generate filters to an RT60 target?

Maybe you can add the MRC filters to Roon in next upgrade wink

Never heard of anything. MRC appears to be quite a unique solution.

I never spent any time with it but REW is the only thing I heard of in this space.

What about the fella that builds filters for people (for a fee of course). What does he use for that ?

That company is Home Audio Fidelity, but that business model (send in your measurements and we'll send you back filters) is unworkable for someone who wants to tweak.

Besides, from what I've read, none of HAF, Dirac, Acourate, Trinnov are "MQA-aware". I'm not saying that these solutions aren't good or MQA compatible, but I've found that, as impressive as these solutions appear (I've used Dirac and Acourate), every time I go back to an MRC filter based approach, I find that I regain something that I hadn't realized I'd lost. It could be top-to-bottom balance; it could be adding bass back in; but it could be something a bit more fundamental than that (i.e. timing).

Either Richard or Des was asked a while back about the impact of (minimum-phase) MRC notch filters on MQA/time smear and the response was that a cascade of MRC filters was relatively benign. Though obviously not ideal, the benefits typically outweigh any deleterious effects.

Remember that (I think) all the non-MRC solutions use pretty heavyweight complex-phase filters. I have no doubt that Meridian had the psycho-acoustic know-how and DSP expertise to do something similar if they had wanted to, but they choose not to. They referred to their solution as "The Gentle Art of Room Correction". You can call that a nice marketing piece if you want, but ultimately, most of us are on this forum because we think that Meridian did things right back then. Richard/Bob/Meridian* chose to implement simple notch filters below 250Hz; there's a lesson there for Meridian "believers".

The reason I'm asking this question is that, although I've re-gained a lot by reverting to the MRC approach, I've also regained some bass boom. I should be able to dial this out surgically, but I'd like the approach to be a bit automated. OTOH, perhaps I just need to tweak the filters that MRC comes up with?

Edit: * with apologies to Rhonda Wilson and Michael Capp

+1

Having tried several solutions previously, I also find MRC is the least deleterious.

That is supposed to be my next approach, if it can not even win MRC, I will not even try!
Actually I turned off MRC since I got my room treated.

For me, the sound of HAF filters implemented by Roon's convolution engine clearly out-perform MRC.

-And they are compatible with MQA provided your final unfold DAC will make use of the "signaling" forwarded by Roon after room correction or any other DSP functions. Both my Dragonfly Cobalt and iFi Black Label renderers complete the MQA process, unlike my Meridian 218 or DSP5200SEs which still lack the firmware update we were promised years ago.

What has happened to our once-proud mothership that they can't seem to get their MQA act together?

Also, LiquidSonics Reverberate Core AU Plug-in will implement my HAF room correction filters when I play music using Audirvana instead of Roon.
