Hi All,

Just throwing this idea out there for comment.

What if:

1) I have a PC, with an MQA compliant analogue output device.
2) I plug the analogue output of this in to a Meridian MPMax221 24/96 Analogue to Digital converter.
3) I plug the coax output of the MPMax221 in to the coax input of some DSP5200 speakers.

Is what I am listening to essentially MQA?

Cheers,
Jason.

No. You’ve undone all the good work by the additional ADC and DAC processes. You want to unfold in your PC and send the 2x sample rate PCM to your 5200s.

A reasonable solution to this was discussed recently in various threads in the Streaming sub-forum.

Essentially the proposed solution was to use a 24/96 capable USB to SPDIF converter and either plug that directly (or indirectly via an optical to coaxial converter) into the DSP.

The PC playing TIDAL should be set to first unfold. That will output 24/96 for onward connection to the DSP. The only significant loss over full-fat MQA should be the absence of DAC-specific correction. It has been theorised that the "default DAC" profile is likely to be Meridian-like but that is supposition.

What this solution should give is the same as using an MQA-decoding capable device into a non-SE speaker.

Caveat to all the above: this is my understanding of what does or might happen and I am happy to be corrected. Perhaps GNA1970 could offer his insights and experience?

Just to add to Gianni’s post, it would also limit MQA to 96/24 but it’s a moot point as this is the limit of non SE DSP’s and would of course not allow MQA to take advantage of high bandwidth electronics such as those in SE speakers and some analogue kit.

As GIANNI has mentioned, I have recently installed the following...

Laptop with Tidal desktop into...

Music fidelity v-link USB to SPDIF converter into...

218 optical input into...

DSP 5000.2 digital input...

The 218 shows the blue MQA light on the correct material and all other laptop and 218 settings are correct as far as I can tell! With standard ‘Tidal hifi’ material the 218 is delivering a pretty good sound, perhaps just shy of the 596 CD/DVD player standard but still very listenable. I have yet to try the MQA material in depth but had a quick listen and it seems very good. I was going to post a longer ‘my thoughts’ after a few more weeks.

You can also connect a laptop into USB/SPDIF direct into DSP 5000’s of course, I will also include my views on that at the same time.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask me anything, I will try to answer as best I can.
Regards...
Guy

You should try an Allo Digione Signature with a good power supply straight in... right up there with the best sounds I’ve heard coming out of DSPs. Roon doing the first unfold, singing away...

What does the 218 bring to the MQA party other than a blue light? Tidal desktop (or Roon) will do the same level of MQA decode when not into non SE speakers - I get the 218 if they were SE speakers, but they are not so 96/24 limited.

I would agree with that. If you are using Roon, unfold in Roon and stream to something like an MS200.

Hmm, I have that setup (have Roon but use Sooloos), so I guess it is just some setting in Roon and I’d have first unfold MQA at 24/96 into the DSP’s.

I do have a G68 in between, managing a DSP5200HC and a DSW sub, so I expect I’d have to select the ‘Direct’ or ‘Stereo’ setting.

Cheers,
Jason.

Roon should do the first unfold automatically with an MS200 endpoint.

The MS200 should be set to direct (or 2x, though I'd wager that the G68 upsampling of RBCD (with latest firmware) is better than the MS200's).

Use whatever DSP setting you like in your G68. You won't be doing further unfolding or upsampling in the G68 or 5200s, so you don't need to be bit-perfect in the G68.
