Hello guys

This is painfully annoying to have to report.
So I got a new hard drive for my C10. (Thanks again to Dominic)
All safely installed and battery changed for a fresh one whilst it was being worked on.

Fired it up and all seemed fine until it got to the registration screen and then it locked up, crashed and now won't get past the loading logo before it goes blank and stays that way!

Any ideas? Other than the bin!!

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick

Sorry to hear of the problems, during the dismantling and subsequent reassembly was the CPU heat sink disturbed, as a passively cooled unit it could be a thermal shutdown, just a thought.

Hello Russ

As far as I know everything was fine. I will open it up and have a look.

Cheers

Some units had a SD drive that was installed on the motherboard. The service manual says that these should be removed and discarded during service. Worth a look to see if it has one installed.

It is VERY easy to reassemble and not have both the CPU and chipset heatsink pads making good contact. With some C10s I have had to use new and slightly thicker pads in both locations to overcome random behaviour caused by overheating.

Another tip: take care with the left side mounted ribbon cable that connects the touch screen sensor to the motherboard. I believe it is a USB connection but the ribbon only makes contact by compression on its contacts. I have fixed apparently flaky touch screens by using a bit of wood (a lollipop/popsicle stick, cut short, is ideal) to pinch the ribbon more fully - cleaning the contacts alone didn’t work.

So I cleaned off the old CPU thermal grease. It was like dried putty.

Applied fresh coat. And hooray it booted up lovely. Playing fine. Then late last night just shut down by itself.
Now when I switch it on I don't even get 'loading please wait'. The CD drive turns over as always, the screen flashes as always then immediately nothing.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Have you definitely removed the Compact Flash card from the motherboard?

I would suspect that one of the connectors has come ajar.

They can easily be unseated when reassembling the machine, and may have worked its way out.

Cheers,
Jason.

I understand the OP has moved to a Roon system.

Thank for update Russ. It’s a wise move ... though it would nice if he confirmed.
