Thanks for those words of advice appreciated , I have had a look and one of the speakers has a label in the vent and the second one has had it removed!. Can I ask Please if something failed on the electronics side of a 7000 would repair be expensive (even for a minor issue), would the whole loudspeaker need to be sent for repair or service or just the back panel. Also are some things completely obsolete now with these ?. With them being an all in musical solution if Something essential failed then potentially you are left with nothing to listen to!.
I believe that the speakers themselves (one of them particularly) May have been put together with the electronics panel of a donor speaker as this ones enclosure is completely missing identification on the cabinet. This in turn is a worry as obviously at some stage it’s had electrical work carried out.

Meridian's DSP speakers have a really good record for reliability. It's extremely rare for someone to post on here about a problem, and when they do, it's usually tired tweeters. There has been a useful discussion in the past couple of years about getting older models serviced by way of re-capping. Meridian themselves never offered this as a service, nor discussed it, but it seems a sensible idea when you consider the emphasis several other amp manufacturers place on the issue.

Apart from the display board, I think pretty much everything else is mounted on the back panel, so that is what would need to be returned for repair/service. Tarik of this parish has successfully refurbed 5000s for some forum members, there's another gent who has been recommended here (name escapes me alas), and of course Edd and his fellow ex Meridian engineers offer this professionally under the "MrTechGuy" name.

Have you bought this pair already, or are you considering doing so? If the former, and they are causing you angst, can you return them? If it's more of a theoretical concern and they sound fine, will your concerns die down with use over time? If so, enjoy the music, if not, move them on. Just my tuppence worth...

Cheers

George

Thanks for the excellent reply George, appreciate all you have said there. Basically I’ve put a deposit on some (nothing to do with anything on this site) but alarm bells were ringing when I find out serial numbers are missing, removed, mixed up etc etc and with it being a considered hopefully long term partnership between me and the speakers I wanted to get a history .

Thanks again for your valued opinion.

You're very welcome. Given the circumstances, I think I'd go for a refund of the deposit, or take the hit if it's not too much, as any future resale would be affected by the same issue.

Cheers

I think if the price is right, I would not worry about matching serial numbers.

The resale price on the 7000s has obviously dropped over the years, and is now probably fairly stable. If the seller will price in your concerns, you can probably enjoy them for several months, and should you decide to move them on, be able to recoup what you paid.

I've only heard 7000s once, but at the time felt they were only slightly better than the 5500s I was using as mains.

This is not intended as patronizing as it will sound, but have you asked the seller to explain these discrepancies?

I used to have similar angst about matching serial numbers. After multiple reassurances (by those more knowledgeable than I) that Meridian manufacturers to a particular standard so performance should be fairly standard as well, I have become more relaxed about it. The only real effect (and even at that it is mostly imagined, not real) of mismatched items is resale. If you get an adequate discount for that reason and have heard them and are satisfied, then buy and enjoy them.

I keep intending to re glue my cabinet label in the port of one of my 5000’s. The glue has dried out and the label is holding on by half inch or so. So the lack of label may not be anything surreptitious, just accidental.

Also, it is my guess that the electronics board of the “red one” has been swapped into that black one. And the red shipping box was kept given that shipping boxes are so prized. You could always scratch the bottom paint to find out... Or remove that electronics panel and look for any red remnants... wink

Out of rotation: DSP5k’s, 568.2mm, 561, more DSP3100’s...
