I've been enjoying my Meridian system for many months thanks to help from the forum. Recently one of my DSP5200 speakers has started making a crackling noise. No noise from any other speaker. I have a 5.1 system comprising 861v4 HD621 FR FL C DSP5200s and two analog back channel speakers. I've read threads on crackling noise and most allude to cable/connector issues or perhaps the digital out card. I unplugged/replugged in cables to the DSP5200 making the noise. This did not help. One note, the crackling sound does not start immediately but can take a while to start and then will continue at intervals over time. I intend to clean the contacts and spray the sockets with Deoxit when I have a chance.

The Master is the center channel. The speaker making the noise was the RF speaker which receives comms from the Meridian COO card. The LF speaker is daisy chained from the RF speaker but the LF speaker does not make the crackling sound. I swapped the RF and LF speakers. The same speaker (now the LF) is still making the crackling sound so I am under the assumption that this speaker is the culprit. Would anyone know what the issue with speaker could be or is this something that requires Meridian repair.

Thank you for any help you may provide.

Regards,
gwho

Does it still crackle when in standby ?

I had one that crackled quietly (still played and operated fine) when on or in standby. Mine needed a new amplifier board and had to go back to Meridian for that repair.

Paul,

I assume standby is when the 861 is off. If this is correct, I have not observed the crackling sound in standby.

Gary

Yes, with the 861 off. Like you I swapped the L / R speakers and the crackle stayed with the same speaker. I swapped the cables and it still stayed with the same speaker.

I finally realised that mine also crackled with no digital or comms cables connected at all. From this I worked out that it had to be something inside the speaker.

Paul,

Was the amplifier board repair a replacement of the tweeter amplifier (I am not hearing any crackling sound coming from the woofers. Do you have to send in the whole speaker or can you send in the amplifier? How costly was the repair?

Gary

Not sure, think there might be just 1 amplifier board (with multiple amps on it) in the speaker. I was just told it was the "amplifier board".

I sent you a PM with the costs.
