Despite diligent benchwork, Russ (at Mr Tech Guy) says my 506 is no more. New laser mech didn't fix, he suspects servo board. I thought about digging through eBay for spares / replacement but anything Meridian of that era to match my 504 tuner, 551 amp and A500 speakers would be of a similar age and could go the same way in the not-too-distant - especially since these laser mechs are very rare.

So what to play my CDs on? I don't have the budget to ditch everything and go fully digital. Plus, importantly, the 551 has a phono stage for my Linn so if I replace that, I have to get a decent phono stage for whatever solution.

As it happens, I have a Marantz all-in-one in my office and it's a decent piece of kit. With CD, DAB, FM and DLNA streaming, it does a lot and, while not in the full high-end range that Meridian now is, it sounds pretty good.

So my thought is now to up-to-date to a Melody X (M-CR612) and use it as a multi-source (CD/DAB/FM/stream) with pre-out to drive the 551.

That gives it a Meridian power amp (which should be better than the onboard) and retains my phone stage for the Linn. It happens also to have two optical inputs so able to connect the TV and STB as well.

I realise it "wastes" the power amp stage of the Marantz, but can anyone suggest an alternative solution which doesn't require a blank sheet of paper / blank cheque?

Cheers,
Mike

I would go Roon and stream to your current kit. An MS200 pre owned would feed in to your existing kit.

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 218 zone... (Thanks Russ) Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2 and Mini. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos.
My F80 is in repair...

If you’re looking for that Meridian 500 series house sound, you won’t replace it with another brand.

Two alternatives spring to mind if you’re looking to retain that house sound:

- Source a 588, or 800 series spinner, as these have a completely different drive mechanism

- Buy a 568, or a Meridian 500 series DAC and a 3rd party transport (such as a decent multi-format disc player). The 568, for example, sounds really very good indeed and very ‘Meridian’.

Either of those float your boat?

Hi

I have my old 506 sitting on a shelf waiting to be serviced/repaired; I am not looking to sell it, it was part of my first purchase back in 1996, along with a 501 and M60's.

I upgraded to a 598, which I still have, although my eldest daughter has it in her system (561/598/DSP5Ks). I never used its capability for DVD playback but it is an excellent CD player.

That maintains your house sound I guess but doesn't offer the flexibility of the Marantz.

Cheers

Jon

I was thinking a 598 too, but unless it's one of the rare analogue output models, the OP will need to add a DAC. I'd then thought of the Director or Explorer, but neither of these have optimal input connections in this case.

For a streaming alternative, Roon and Tidal are excellent, but Roon is ~£350 to buy outright, and Tidal at £240 per year (with all the vagaries of label licencing arrangements) may not appeal if the OP is happy spinning his current collection. There's also the computer hardware aspect to consider, even if alternative 'own library' streaming solutions were used.

All of which makes a late 588 seem like a good option as 3dit0r notes, and it would slot into the current system perfectly, with an upgraded sound too.

Cheers

George

A nice 596 would do, they have analogue-outs as standard. Has been described as "the poor man's 588" or did I just make that up?

I have a couple sat in my cupboard whilst I wonder what to do with them, I'm really not good at letting go of old stuff. They'll find me surrounded by antique hifi when they finally break down my door to take me away!

Regards

Richard

You could consider a 500 transport and 500-series DAC. The 500 has a very 'analog-like' sound and was a great machine while I had it.

The 588 is also excellent.

Hi Richard

Good idea, I'd completely forgotten about the 596. I do remember discussion about it being a very good CD player, and only slightly behind the 588.

Problem solved Mike?

Mike, I have both versions of servo board for the 506, unused factory spares. Let me know if you're interested.

Jason.

Repair the 506!

Lovely players, I still remember when I first heard one in the basement listening room of HiFi Experience on Tottenham Court Road. Trounced all the other players in the demo.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Keeping the ability to play CDs is important, as is using my Sondek. I have been experimenting with JRiver / UPNP / Explorer for streaming but not yet ready to move this from my work room to our main room. The main system is also used for TV, STB, DVD player and cassette (more legacy smile ) so the inputs and mains sockets are already pretty crowded which sort of points away from a multi-box solution.

Anyhow, your suggestions have given me a lot to research and think about. The 506 has been away since August 2018 so I guess a few more days won't hurt. That said, it was repaired by Meridian in 2007, by Meridian Repair Shop in 2016 and failed again in 2018 so maybe that's telling me something.

Thanks, Mike

I’m with others suggesting a 596. Basically the precursor to the multi channel 598 - so much so that it was upgradable to 598 spec which is what I did. Worked equally well as CD and DVD player - I suspect not too dissimilar to the 598 in 2 ch mode - I was just getting into hi res and DVD-A at the point I upgraded 596 to 598 (which 598 in my eyes won hands down due to discreet multi channel and DVD-A) but the 596 still played great as a 2 ch player with the advantage that, along with the 598, also played hi res DVD’s, just not discrete multi channel or DVD-A tracks.
