Hi Steve

I've just reread the entire thread and it's still not clear to me what you have tried, and the results produced at each stage. I get the impression that this is perhaps a bit "full on" for you, but if you work methodically through the steps and describe the results so we can help meaningfully, you'll get there.

From what I have read:

When you disconnected the 218 and tried the CD player directly into the Master speaker, it sounds like you were changing Types to get it to work. That wouldn't have worked unless you had a Meridian Speakerlink CD player, your Rega has SPDIF coax, so whatever the type, you need to go into the Master speaker's front panel config with the MSR+ remote and set the CD source for the coax input instead of the default Speakerlink RJ45 input.

Because your Rega needs to be wired to the Master DSP and not via the 218, the Slave speaker now needs to be daisy chained from the Master, and not connected to the Slave output of the 218.

Was the CD player good in this configuration? Did it all work? You made mention of it still being "a bit wiggy" at some point, not sure it was with CD or thereafter, as your last wiring description sounds like you went back to having the 218 in circuit, and the SpeakerLink cables to each DSP direct from that again?

Cheers

George

YES, It took me a couple tries but I did end up with the connection as you say and audible output. While my system was playing stable for awhile I did start having to adjust the balance to keep things centered, songs I'm familiar with.

There were times I'd get to +30 to realize I wasn't getting any output from a channels mid range only to have to adjust balance to +5 on the other side when the amp did kick in!

Playing music thru CD was by far the most stable in comparison to the 218. The PO denies any issues, but that could be a trust thing. I can say I did find 1 song the left channel amp struggles with regardless of which head unit is plugged into it.

The fact that nobody knows what I’m talking about is reassuring I guess. It would be disappointing if 20 owners popped up and said ‘oh yea mine did that to after a few years ‘. It would be the perfect excuse to upgrade them.

Is it worth listing a couple of tracks and positions where you are hearing issues. Maybe someone will listen to same on their kit and see if they hear the same - won't be the first time that a well known track has revealed a hidden secret when played on Meridian kit.

May also be worth saying, for those that don't realise that balance is not balance but seating position - it works in reverse to what one may expect and does more than just wholesale left/right panning.

These baby's need some TLC. The panning effect is an artifact of the speakers themselves and I suspect some of my fascination of 'hearing songs like never before' when I first brought them home.

I started a new job last week and depending on how it goes will determine the speakers fate, I have an old pair of Vienna Acoustics Beethoven speakers that sound good connected to my H360 that I can happily listen to while my next move becomes clear. If I can't repair them I'll recover as much as I can with full disclosure.

I looked all around these cabinets and could only find a small blemish on the bottom back corner of 1 speaker. So I did it! I ordered the se update kit!!!

I received 1 and after installation I'm pretty excited to get the other. Obviously the 2 speakers don't play well together with them using different firmware, but hearing the potential of the one speaker sounds promising.

I’ve pulled them from the system for now and patently wait the 2nd unit. Apparently Meridian matched each speaker to a master vs pairs as some do?

Meridian has a house sound which they use as a reference in tuning speaker models. When they have to change a driver (when discontinued or improved), they voice the speaker with DSP to eliminate differences in output across the frequency spectrum. Spoken like a true accountant who is at somewhat confident this is a decent analogy anyway.

I had a Georgia Tech engineer named Koval explain it to me once. I countered with a pithy summation of the accounting complications of going off Libor.

I had some old Kef R, back in the Raymond Cooke, Laurie Fincham days and though the speakers were sold as matched pairs I thought it was more for matching veneers since while pairs were said to be matched to within a .5 dB of each other they were all said to be matched to 1 dB of the ref standard. I expect it's much easier to do with DSP speakers.
