Just a thought, the timing correct of filters called speaker optimize which is only about the speaker itself nothing about the room, right?

So if this part of filters make such big improvement, why can't M correct it for the DSP speaker in factory?
It's all in digital domain after all.

Or I am wrong, is it still about the room in some way?

After the v8, Meridian seemed to stall and loose direction. I might have stayed if they did not mess up the whole MQA thing with misinformation and lack of follow through. I would definitely have purchased an MQA card for stereo if they had released one.

I only have a 5.1 system so I did not change to Trinnov to it to get more codecs although that may change in the future.

I thought that the Trinnov would sound better than the 861 once I had applied the room correction as I have a combined lounge room and theatre so room treatment was not an option.

I was completely surprised how the Altitude 32 beat the 861 straight out of the box and I am talking stereo only!

It is now even better since I have set it up properly. The Trinnov optimizer is a dream to use compared with the 861 room correction and deals completely with the difficult room I have. The speakers now just blend in seamlessly with each other. The Auro 3D upmixer is so good that it is hard to tell that it is on. So much better than Trifield

The move to Trinnov was a big investment but I don’t regret it for a minute.

Thanks to Bruce who I met at Cedia who encouraged me to do the switch.

For my money, Meridian should offer something like this - Altitude48ext.

So, update the 861 to v9 and make it state of the art again for 7.1 channels and MQA, then offer an 861ext for those who want Atmos, etc.

861v9 state of the art - Now that I would be interested in as I'm never realistically going beyond 7.1

That plus an add-on box for those who do want more channels could be ‘job done’...

You never know. I didn’t find installing 4 speakers in my ceiling too Herculean a task and no one notices the grills flush with the ceiling. Active speakers may be more of a challenge.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

I switched to the Trinnov at the end of last summer. I have owned M since the mid 1990s and have slowly upgraded my system to its current state.

I started with the 565 then 568 and 861v3, 4, 6 and 8. Speaker wise I’ve had 5000s, 5500s and now 8000s along with a few of Ms subs along the way. So needless to say I’m a big M fan.
I started talking to Rick (Audio Images) about the Trinnov when it seemed that M wasn’t going to extend the 861s life past it’s current version. Rick was extremely helpful and is very knowledgeable on the Trinnov. When the 271 came out I saw the handwriting on the wall (as far as the 861 ever supporting advanced audio codecs). It made me sad in a way as I loved my 861.

As I mostly use my system for movies these days I decided to take the plunge to go with Trinnov. I contacted Bruce (CMB Integrations here on the board) as he was running a Black Friday special on the Trinnov/271 combination at the time and we started talking about all of it. One thing led to another and I traded my 861/HD621/800 in for the Trinnov/271. Bruce was a new Trinnov dealer back then and has been learning quickly. He was / is great to work with.

All that to say the Trinnov is a big step up over the 861 in all of its capabilities. There is a huge learning curve if you want to get the most out of it and I’m still in the early stages of learning what it can do.

The Trinnov is what the 861 should have become IMHO.

I feel we are very fortunate to have Rick for the UK and Bruce for the US on this board for those wanting to go to the Trinnov (Also for all your M needs) - both very knowledgeable and highly recommended.

My gear: Trinnov Alt 32 (8-16), 271,8000.1(SEs),7200.1(SE),320s,3200s,5500s ,SW5500s ,MS200 (2nd zone),218.
Other: JVC RS-500 projector, Prismasonic HD-5000 anamorphic lens, Panasonic UB900, Oppo BDP-203, QNAP TS-251 (M core and store).

I have not switched to Trinnov. Other priorities makes the switch seem costly and the SQ upgrade from a great Trifield setup not enticing enough.

I would gladly upgrade my 861v8 to a new 192kHz+ engine with MQA decoding a.k.a 861v8.2 or v9.
Having room correction, upsampling and MQA done with a faster and more precise engine will benefit the whole system in both music and movies.

If M also put a multichannel XMOS (XCORE 200?) USB input on the unit for 7.1 in 24/192 multichannel would make gaming so awesome on it! laugh

I've not switched to Trinnov for the same reason that I'm still running an 861v4: I'm simply not that interested in multi-channel audio to invest such a huge amount of money in it; and I suspect that Meridian has realized that I'm in the majority.

The Meridian product portfolio has moved significantly to modular gear; or, put another way, many of the products can be used in multiple ways and with more interoperability than ever before. The 271 is simply there to sell more DSP loudspeakers and probably justifies its development cost in this regard, because it enables a LOT of DSP loudspeakers.

I'm not denying that a state-of-the-art cinema in the right room will sound incredible, but my aspirations don't go beyond my - frankly pretty amazing - 5.0 DSP system.

Rather ironically, in view of its multi-channel focus, one of the first things I noticed after switching from my 861 to the Trinnov was the big improvement in stereo music reproduction in the lower registers. Meridian’s RC was never able to properly tame the bass in my room without sucking the life out of it.
