Currently, Roon Core sits on my iMac (2018 i5, 24GB RAM, 500GB SSD) with my music library on an attached HDD.

It all works well, except that the iMac lives upstairs and the 808v6 lives downstairs, which means that most of the time I have to run upstairs to wake up the iMac before I can use Roon. Also, I have started to gather a few UHD/HDR movie files which I would like to stream to the TV which is in the same room as the 808v6.

So I thought I would 'kill two birds with one stone' and set up a media server that ran Roon and Plex using a pre-owned Mac mini (i5, 8Gb RAM, 250GB SSD) with attached HDD, which could would only shut down late at night and wake in the morning. This would leave my iMac just for it's main use (photo editing and general surfing).

Any one forsee any problems with that set up?

I wouldn't shut down the Mac. Roon does stuff in the background all the time, not least updating metadata. Plus, you really should configure a Roon backup and you don't want to run that during the day.

My Roon NUC is similar spec to what you are suggesting. It’s a latest 8 gen i5 model and came in just over £500 mark. Gen 7 NUCs would come in much cheaper. Don’t know what Mac mini will be costing you.

Took me about 30 mins to build and setup Rock on it. I hate wasting energy but I’m happy to leave this on 24/7 and can’t remember last time I heard it.

My original thought was to go for a NUC running ROCK, but when I decided that I would need a 'media server' that would run Plex as well, it would have meant installing a Windows OS and using Roon Core. If I have to have a standard OS then I would prefer Mac OS. The last incarnation of a Mac Mini, at the spec I need should be around £500.

Apologies, I glossed over the media side of things. Yes, ROCK would only act as NAS storage and not as media server - unless Roon expanded to offer that capability. Fwiw, looks like Sooloos may have started life with video in mind so I would never rule out Roon moving into that direction.

I am pleasantly surprised at £500 for Mac Mini. When I bought my NUC, a similar spec Mac Mini came in around £800 and I think that was refurb pricing.

My pricing is based on eBay listings, so may be hit and miss.
