So I am having hiccups with my G68J. I turned on my family room system tonight (HTPC, HD621, 3x5200s, stereo amped rears).

The G68 is kind of cycling. It seems happy when turned off. The screen comes up with the Meridian logo, but then goes off as if I am cycling the front 'on/off button'. The sequence is screen up, a faint click, on/off flashes and then again. Each cycle is about 2-3s.

I did introduce an HD621 about a week ago and it's been working fine. I have turned off the HD621 to test, and I still get the issue. (I thought it might be crazy comms or something).

I'll probably reconfig the HD621 to drive the 5200s directly to keep Mrs_G happy, but I'd like to diagnose and fix.

Edit: OK, it's now made a burning smells so I'm guessing that suggests the power supply

Definitely the power supply, hopefully it hasn’t taken anything else out yet.

Plenty of posts on here with info and replacement part numbers; if you can do DIY it is cheap, not so much through a dealer!

Thanks. Probably not comfortable doing it myself, but I'll probably try and find an independent. We don't really have dealers here anymore so I'll ask ona local forum.

Is there any way I can open up to look for something blackened and burnt, or should I just leave it to the professionals?

It's quite old and only a G68J, but I have just ponied up for the HD621 to get Bluray in the family room, so I would like it working.

Given the symptoms and the burning smell it is definitely the PSU so little to be gained by opening it up unless you are going to replace yourself.

Swapping the PSU is fairly easy and there is information on how to do it. The harder part is swapping the capacitors which should be changed at the same time as the PSU.

You then have to hope that none of the cards has been damaged when the PSU failed as that will pretty much mean it is unrepairable (at least cost effectively)

Is anyone, Bruce maybe, keeping track of failed units and potentially salvageable cards? Or when power supply goes, is it invariably the same cards that it takes out?

Not officially. In my case with a G68ADV it took out the DSP card.
