Same problem here (Mac guy).
I bought a $250 HP Windows laptop off Amazon along with a USB to serial port adapter.
It's a f******* annoying P.O.S. that is constantly blocking half the screen to extort money from me (I ignore it), and only have it for this exact one task: configuring a Meridian devices.

Haven't been arsed to reformat the damned thing, because I've used it maybe 5 times since I bought it in November, for the single purpose of tweaking Meridian kit. It's a $250 tool and so far its the cheapest Meridian related thing I've purchased.

Reformat, sounds overkill ... can’t you just uninstall the AV program?

When you buy a budget PC from a once great technology company that now tries to make ends meet by selling your privacy, there is so much bloatware / malware on it that the only safe thing to do is nuke it with a clean install of Windows. It’s the only way to be sure.

The AV Adware is probably the least troubling [censored] HP installed on it. They've all got back doors on them that "only tech support can access, pinky swear". Ha ha ha.

And I just don't care. It’s a toy computer as far as I'm concerned. Runs on my guest network with no access to anything else. It’s the only Windows box in the house.

I abhor Windowz. But for my items that require it I use an old Lenovo SFF THINKCENTER. They are always available for around $70.00. They have the serial out connectors for connection to a null modem cable. Setup on a rolling cart to go from system to system if updates are needed. No stinking adware.

If it’s only used for this one thing, could you not ditch (or not install it after a fresh OS build) all the anti virus / malware software and just never connect it to the internet?

Windows 10 already has all the antivirus you need. In some ways, Windows 10 is now better than MacOS. Ironically, installing antivirus can increase your risk of getting a virus (some antivirus software opened up attack vectors that default Windows 10 did not).

I've used the computer for maybe 50 minutes since November, though, so on my List of Things To Spend Time On, it is, well, it’s not on the list.

Thanks for all the help. I got hold of a Windows laptop a while ago and had a look at downloading the Configuration programme but came across this ...

'Most recent configurable Meridian products are configured with the new Meridian Configuration Program. However if you need to configure 568, 568.2, 562, 562V.3, 561, DSP33 and DSP420 products you will need to use the legacy program (Meridian.exe).'

I can't find a link to the legacy program that I need. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

I agree about HP, very sad. I remember when my main Avid edit computer was an HP workstation when they were the benchmark standard.

I use an old Dell Inspiron laptop updated with Win 10 just to run Roon core and Meridian MConfig.

Once I have the funds to build a dedicated NUC/ROCK for Roon, the PC will only be used for MConfig, as my Macs do everything else I need.

Update - I've had success in finding and downloading the Legacy Configuration Programme but have ground to a halt after that.

The two laptops I've tried to use the programme (1 Windows Pro 10 and 1 Windows 7) have failed to 'speak' to the 568. This is using a USB-Serial converter and also the same plus a Null Modem cable. Neither laptops have had a serial port on them.

My local Meridian dealership guy has told me that the Null Modem cable I need has to be wired in a particular manner (something like the 2 + 9 together). So, if that's right, even if I buy a laptop with a serial port on it I still don't have any chance of making it work with the Legacy Config. He also said that Meridian didn't want people messing around with this stuff anymore but that doesn't sound right to me.

Can anyone give any advice? Worth trying a laptop with a serial port in it? Or pay the dealership to sort it out?

To be honest I've kind of forgotten why I have the HD621 now. Is it going to make a great deal of difference? At the moment it's an expensive HDMI hub.
