I got in a Mytek Stereo 96 this week - let's get to the bad news : first - these are being discontinued - the good news is the remaining stock is being discounted to get'em gone.(per usual -no connection with Mytek ,etc..).

My interest in Meridian DSP5000 24/96 speakers is for stereo use and mainly for critical? listening to LP's at that.

I was very lucky to obtain a Meridian MPmax 221 A2D - pretty quickly realized that finding another one would be a challenge. So looked for another A2D the Mytek Stereo 96 fills the bill pretty nicely : SPDIF and TOSLINK, Tops out at 24/96 (so do my speakers), balanced analog inputs (useful for unbalanced signal levels as well), and finally input level LED's - very useful to avoid overloading the digital input (something that will sound simply awful). The signal level LED's are also interesting for LP playback because you can get some idea of just how much dynamic range the engineers got onto a record.

One quibble : this is pro/studio equipment, it's got internal jumpers to configure it just right for your use - this of course means that between the front panel switches and buttons and internal jumpers and trim pots - I'm sure you can get this to either sound lousy or even make no sound at all into a set of DSP speaker. READ THE MANUAL-TWICE! If buying used - pull the top cover and look where the internal jumpers are.

So here's what I've been listening to: Ortofon Quintet Black S/SME IV/ Technics SL-1200 Mk5 / Parasound Zphono XRM - balanced out into the Mytek.

Folks this is really sweet if you're looking for a stereo analog solution for 24/96 speakers this might interest you.

That sounds like a very nice set up, SME on a 1200, must be solid as a rock!

I found this DSP Phono Stage interesting, it's a pity it doesn't have a digital out though.

If you can find a Meridian 601, it also had DSP presets for getting vinyl into a digital system, albeit limited frequency by today's minimum standard of 96kHz.

All the best,

Steve

Very interesting - DSP phono makes a whole lot of sense (what I really need is ANOTHER phono stage - the flock is at a dozen or so right now smile!

The EE and friend who kept trying to get to a good sounding streaming solution (and repeatedly was disappointed for a decade or more.) called me a few years back and said he thought he had it. So I stopped in and listened to Linn's streaming online demo (7-8 years ago?) this allowed you to listen to the same music at different bit depths/sampling rates. I was struck (and frankly sorta depressed) by how much better the first bump up to 24/48 sounded compared to 16/44 CD rate and 24/96 seemed at least as lacking in digitoises as a well reproduced LP (and of course NO noise).

Since then 24/96 has seemed like a good enough goal for me - the very pleasant and complete surprise since I acquired the DSP5000's has been what a remarkable - outright pleasant - experience listening to well recorded CD's is thru these digital speakers! And thru either the 221 or the Mytek stereo 96 I'm able to get quality analog thru these really exceptional DSP speakers.
