The Meridian 210 is ‘Roon Ready’.
It has integral USB input for attaching a HDD.
Plus, Meridian state that it is “Usable without the need for any additional ‘core’ device”.

So, have I mis/understood this correctly, that with...

A purchased Roon license,
Roon iOS on my iPad,
An attached HDD on the 210.

...that an alternative Roon Rock option is not necessary/required?

My Mac can go all the way to XI - Mac user since 1988 - Meridian owner since 1993.

You would still need a Roon Core to run Roon and it would be seen as an audio endpoint. As I understand it.

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 218 zone... (Thanks Russ) Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2 and Mini. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos.
My F80 is in repair...

My understanding is that relates to some of the other features that 210 offers, such as Spotify, AirPlay etc.

I would take a look at the Roon Knowledge Base for the minimum specs to run Roon and consider if the 210 has this.

+1 As Ian correctly says the no core requirement relates to streaming services and Airplay, Roon Ready refers to the support of the Roon RAAT protocol as an endpoint which enables it to be zone grouped with other manufacturers RAAT compatible endpoints amongst other additional benefits.

No way of avoiding purchasing a core device for Roon and indeed you would need a core device for Sooloos too.

Once again Meridian documentation being less than crystal clear.

I think the key word in there is additional. The assumption is that the Roon user already has a core device. If that word was missing I'd take it to mean that no core was required at all.

Cheers

Given an assumption of running Roon ROCK, and choosing between either 218 or 210, is there any benefit in utilising one or the other, or both?

Of interest, looking at the Roon Forum, there was a question from 2017 on whether RAAT was better than Meridian’s Sooloos protocol...

Quote:
Under ideal conditions, there should be no sonic differences.

However, RAAT includes 6+ years of experience and knowledge gained AFTER making the M protocol. The 2 areas you will benefit the most are: features outside the audio itself, and preventing dropouts or quality issues arising from bad networks.

I use a 218 flawlessly with Roon, the only issue is you cannot link zones with Roon certified endpoints.
I use a spare MS200 to feed the optical input of my kitchen Pulse mini allowing me to sync those zones.

Does anyone know what sample rates the 210 supports - do we know if it's an improvement on the 24/96 streaming to the 218?
