Considering buying a 218 AND a phono stage in order to add a turntable, which will then feed into a pair of DSP5000's with the 24/96 option.

Does this make any sense, as opposed to something like a PS audio nu wave A2D converter?

Also, can a G98 input to a 218 and from there connect to DSP5000's and, if so, would it do anything to improve the sound?

It's an interesting problem, and one I'm thinking about myself.

Certainly you can use a phono stage and 218 to feed 5K (I use a Dino/NC phono and 218 to feed 5K2s). However, I'm sceptical of the quality of the A2D in the 218 - given its price point and focus on digital/MQA and "lifestyle" I can't help thinking the analogue side is tacked on as an after-though. Of course this is my view only and I have no evidence either way. Maybe someone has been able to do a side-by-side against the 818 as an A2D?

The NuWave is designed and built specifically for the phono/A2D task by a team who seem to have a good reputation. The advantage you have is that it is probably a lot easier to get hold of in the States than it is here to experiment with. It's one of my New Year projects to try and source one in the UK to test.

It is certainly worth doing something though - FWIW and with my choices of music and every other caveat I can add - my turntable sounds better/more enjoyable to me than anything sub-HiRes/MQA.

I agree with the comment above that A/D in the 218 won’t be the main focus of the unit and so the A/D likely isn’t the absolute best for the money given everything else the 218 is designed to accomplish.

In terms of dedicated ADC, as well as the PSAudio, how about e.g., one of the Mytek solutions? Depending on your budget, they have a couple of ADCs at different price points (Stereo 96 and Brooklyn). The more expensive Brooklyn has MQA ADC conversion and you can add an optional phono input card. The Stereo 96 would require a separate phono stage though. I had a sublime phono stage from Audio Note Kits a while back, which was very very sweet to listen to.

If, however, you want to add streaming audio/Roon/Tidal/MQA to your system at the same time as introducing a vinyl rig, the 218 would be a no-brainier.

Thanks for the input you guys. My thought* was that the 218 would, in order of priority: 1) step up the performance of the G98 and/or the 5000's; 2) provide A/D for a turntable; would be useful if I were to look at streaming and MQA.

*possibly ill informed

G98 and 96/24 5k's is a pretty mean combo. Not sure what 218 would bring to the party SQ wise unless you used it to decode MQA discs being spin on G98. It also may introduce cabling issues (speakerlink vs legacy comms/SPDIF)? But it would be a 'budget' one box solution for A/D and Sooloos/Roon audio endpoint.

As an aside, I heard that 218 actually far exceeded expectations many peoples expectations SQ wise. So whilst its no 8xx, it will likely still do justice to the 5k's.

For that combination of uses, a 218 does make sense, so I understand your thinking.

A couple of thoughts -

In terms of MQA, your 5Ks (which I still believe to be great speakers, by the way!) will limit you to the first unfold, so bear in mind you’ll get no more than Roon will give you decoding the first unfold itself anyway.

In terms of ADC, and improving the system’s overall sound, would it be worth considering e.g., a 568.2mm, or similar endpoint? Those sound great, and they’re cheap enough you could source a phono stage and streaming endpoint separately.

The ultimate would probably be an 861v4 - you can upgrade it as funds allow with the linear PSU and add an ID40 card when you’re ready to stream, and a phono stage when you’re ready for that. It will raise the SQ of the system enormously.

But all dependent on budget, of course.
