This was just posted on the MQA Facebook page by (I suspect) one of our members...

Quote:
TIDAL Masters is now available on all Android smartphones, so you can experience studio quality sound with TIDAL Masters wherever you choose to listen.

Global music and entertainment platform, TIDAL, first announced its partnership with MQA at CES in January 2017, after integrating MQA’s award-winning technology into its TIDAL HiFi tier on desktop. MQA captures, packages and delivers the original sound, at the highest quality, and in a file small enough to stream. With the latest update, the TIDAL Android app will now include the MQA decoder.

As listening habits evolve, mainstream audiences are increasingly choosing to stream music and listen on their mobile devices.

Mike Jbara, MQA CEO, stated, “We know that most music fans are choosing to stream on their phones. MQA’s view is that you should have the best quality sound regardless of where you’re listening. We’re delighted that, through our ongoing collaboration with TIDAL, access to master quality audio is now expanding across mobile."

Lior Tibon, TIDAL COO, commented, “This is a major advancement for the audiophile community and TIDAL’s HiFi members. As our platform evolves, our partnership with MQA continues to expand and cements our position as a leader in the High-Fidelity audio space.”

MQA has partnerships with all three major record labels, as well as the independent label community, and the range of master quality music continues to grow rapidly, covering new releases and catalogue recordings.

TIDAL members can learn more about Master quality audio on TIDAL.com/Masters

Just did a force update of the TIDAL app on my Samsung Galaxy A5 - there was an update pending.

Previously downloaded MQA material now has the MQA [M] showing next to it smile

Will be interesting to see if I can detect a qualitative improvement through ear-buds while travelling on the London Underground...

Looks like you have to remove any downloaded content and then download it again though in order to get the MQA version, then it will display [MASTER] when playing back the file. The M icon appears only to indicate that it is available as an MQA/Master version (similar to the Windows app).

Question is, on Android devices that have MQA capable DACs (like the Pioner XDP-300R); will this updated Tidal app take full advantage of those capabilities?

Thanks Tennant - you are absolutely correct. Grrrr... mad

The [Master] logo comes on in a baleful orange/ochre on my device, and the play progress bar is also orange instead of blue.

Edit1: And it seems that the annoying feature of the Samsung Galaxy that demands an OK to raise the volume above a certain level has disappeared, at least when playing MQA content.

Edit2a: It seems that the MQA files are bigger than the Hi-Fi ones that I previously had downloaded. I have been carefully deleting the original, then downloading the MQA version, one album at a time. And clearing the cache, etc. in between each step. My phone filled up before completing the full migration. Surely this is not what is expected?

Edit2b: The SQ does seem very good (even through standard Samsung earbuds). Textural things like bass guitar notes and cymbal runs are noticeable, as is the instrumental separation. Not sure it is better than before as this is not a blind A:B test and I am listening in a quiet space but the music is very familiar to me.

Just trying to get my head around this...

This means the Tidal App is now bit perfect?

I wasn't sure I understood why then MQA were making reference to USB Audio Player Pro and it's in App purchase of the MQA functionality. If the Tidal App is bit perfect and can also play downloaded MQA that is wonderful. More so if an Explorer or Dragonfly can fully render the MQA files.

Hopefully this will help get more catalogue into MQA.

Might also add that downloading MQA albums really takes up more space than I had expected.

I can imagine some people, accidentally streaming over cellular, getting a shock.

So is this the moment when the genius of MQA becomes truly apparent? Despite all of the noise about adequate bandwidth/storage, when it comes to how most people do access music, HiRes FLAC would not fly?

Just as an update to the comments above, I'm finding that Master content will stream and play, even if you don't have the album downloaded. At any rate, MQA content I've streamed has the orange Master label and progress bar, just as it does when playing back locally stored MQA albums. And I must say, it does sound very good!

Cheers

George

My experience also.
