Is Roon better than Sooloos? No!!!!

Sometimes it cant find my Meridian endpoints. There is a little bit more information in Roon, but is that worth 50$ a year?

I Think Sooloos is absolutely the best choice it is simple and straightforward and is always working.

Is Roon better than Sooloos for you? No

Happy to agree with Herman except for the weaknesses in legacy M storage 2xMD600 in my case, with no reliable diagnostics.

But hey ho I have learnt to live with this and don't expect any change. Happy with Tidal / MQA / my system, as is but might invest in 218 to extend capability to another zone.

I use Roon and the only time I have trouble with my MS200 endpoints is when I occasionally have to re start a power line adapter in my Bedroom Zone. This is an issue on my network and not a Roon fault.
Hardwired cat5e zones are rock solid.

Further to my last reply, I did have a Roon zone issue today and noticed the Ram on my QNAP was saturated. A restart of the core fixed this. Systems normal now.

I must admit, I found using a MC200 as Roon endpoint to G68 brilliant, will try next week on 861v4 with ID40 and will report.

The only issue I’ve seen is that ID41 in 818v3 is deselected in Roon if someone uses Sooloos to that zone. The seemless integration of non Meridian endpoints is really nice. Haven’t worked out how to link zones yet.

Export from MD600 (4TB) to QNAP is taking forever, but will be happy to 100% transition when done. Meridian dropping Control:Mac has really soured me.

Cheers, Ian

HermanatHome,

There's hope!

As reference, they're all just a bunch of network devices, and either can work with 99.999% reliability. I've used Roon for years without any trouble with several 100% Meridian endpoints in our house and garage.

What's very likely happening is that something in the configuration of your network or your Roon core computer's configuration is at the heart of the problem. I'd recommend posting a detailed description of the issue you're having in the tech support area of the Roon community. It will help move things along quickly if you give full descriptions of your network topology (your gateway, any routers or switches, and how each device connects [directly to the main router vs. via an intermediary switch for example]).

You'll also want to include the details of your core and endpoints. The Roon tech support folks are really good at digging in to solve specific network issues.

Best of luck!

Earlier in this thread I spoke of powerline issues. I have a fix.

I now have a spare iFi MS200 power supply which I transferred to the zone in question. I plug this in the adjacent socket on the power block and moved a noisy power supply to the furthest point on the block.

Now all the LED indicators on the powerline adapter are always green. Before orange and red were commonly seen.

No drop outs since...

I have found that, in terms of metadata and general user experience, Roon is everything I always wished Sooloos should have been (yet never achieved) and Tidal integration is so much better and more intuitive also. So generally, I prefer it by far. It also has amazing flexibility outside a Meridian ecosystem if, e.g., I wish to play some music downstairs simply through my Sky box and soundbar/sub.

It's not as good at automatically finding endpoints, core, etc. in my current setup but that's not comparing apples with apples - Sooloos was a closed ecosystem where I ran an MC200 as core/store with an 818 endpoint and Control:Mac with iPad/iPhone remotes. Currently, Roon core is on an old PC, store is a Synology NAS to an 818 endpoint with iPhone/iPad remotes. I suspect if I were to buy a Nucleus, or build a ROCK/NUC dedicated core, it would probably run/boot/find as stable as Sooloos did.

Have you tried assigning fixed IP addresses to, e.g., core/store/endpoint? This helped Roon find things more consistently after restarts/network outages, etc. in my setup.
