First a quick explanation ...

I am living in temporary home for a few months and have not been using my Meridian Kit. Over Christmas decided to connect a music set up using config precisely the same as at my home... all plays well but no MQA playback no matter what I do.... and I did a lot!

The MQA light on 218 does not illuminated (neither green nor blue) nor the MQA signal on my 5200SEs.

Tear everything down - triple checked for hours replaced cables, and had Rick’s trusty help to make sure no mistakes - it’s pretty straightforward so should not be mistakes ... but no MQA.

Source material is all Tidal master - I tried many new and old!

Set up is C15 to Netgear switch via network port on C15
TwinStore to Netgear switch
Switch to 218 network port and then SpeakerLink out to 5200s
Switch to house Ethernet to Internet usine Draytek.

This arrangement is exactly as I had in my home when it worked perfectly.
I have checked the setup config and it’s all as prescribed. Firmware is up to date.

Is it possible for the MQA decoding function in a 218 to fail?

All music plays at MHR 88 or 96 as shown on the speakers

What can it be?

Thanks in advance
Regards Huw

I cannot see how you can do anything wrong (as it works) unless the output on the C15 is not bit perfect.
If you had Roon the signal path would be informative and helpful.

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. F80

Tidal has to be setup in bypass mode or something like that so it just passes the native MQA file through without trying to decode it, that may be the issue, you can check it in the Tidal program on a pc or Mac.

On a Windows 7 PC it should be something like this a Mac may differ is some details, note this was for an Explorer so the sound output would be different for you?

In the Tidal desktop application:

File, Settings, Streaming:

Quality = HiFi/Master

Sound Output = Meridian USB input audio, then hover to the right and you should see a round tool icon, click and select:

Use Exclusive Mode

Force volume

Passthrough MQA

You could also remove Tidal from the system and download some Test MQA Files to see if these work correctly.

Cheers
Tom

Answer to all,

I have solved this, albeit not what I expected...

I was trawling around the Tidal site and discovered that my subscription had been downgraded from hi-fi to standard... hence though the downloaded albums were tagged MQA they actually were not!

I have no explanation as to how this change occurred - it was not something I did myself. I have been a hi-fi member from the beginning but in September somehow it got changed. Because I was not using my system for several months I had not noticed it ... very very strange and a little sinister.

Anyway all is back to normal now - thanks for responses.

Best Regards and best to all for New Year,
Huw
