Please send PM with suggestions to supply a properly fitted CDM. My previous experience of shipping entire 506 unit resulting in laser failure.

Today I replaced the latest CDM12.4 laser assembly with the previous one. I transferred the black hat cap and CD platter also. It is getting better. Still skips, but mush less.

While transferring the black hat cap CD platter, I discovered that it could have been pushed further onto the motor spindle. I also discovered I have uncentered the black hat cap, resulting in the CD disc slightly wobbling when spinning.

So I did not have the spacing from laser lens to CD disc surface correct. But I still have wobble, enough that tracking can jump one or two tracks. Adjustment of the CD clamp assembly is now non-critical.

Conclusion, I need to procure a new blackhat cap and CD platter.

I have replaced cap with a milled aluminum one. Performance is almost perfect.

Conclusions:
Error code meanings are not available due to Meridian restriction.
A cheap Chinese laser assembly replacement is not as good as original Phillips laser mechanism.
A rebuilt Phillips laser assembly is not readily available.

I just upgraded the 506 firmware with a replacement EPROM from Meridian Legacy.
Previous was 1.04.
Upgrade is 1.12.
The CD player now operates flawlessly. Upgrade eliminated occasional skipping.

I also purchased an EPROM with 1.12 firmware for my 508. Will replace EPROM soon.
