Well at least according to this article CEDIA 2018: QOBUZ launching in USA, Roon support coming.

Supposedly, they have 80k albums in 24 bit. I'll be checking this out in more detail.

Is it just me, or does the ageing Paul Simon look really like the ageing William Shatner on that Qobuz screenshot??

It's certainly an interesting option. What's the current consensus regarding run of the mill hi-res vs MQA?

"It's the mastering, stupid." By which I mean, you need a good master to start with. Given the same master, I'd choose MQA, but I am very invested in that.

So, choose the format which has the mastering you like the sound of most. Unless the same master is available for all formats, in which case MQA?

Does this only apply if you have SEs, though?

Can't wait for Roon to sort out the delivery of Qobuz, which is much stronger on classical than TIDAL. Presumably Roon will allow the Qobuz 24/96 and 24/192 offerings (which are extensive via Qobuz Sublime, which just got cheaper than TIDAL) to be streamed without any compression (assuming a 24/96 or 24/192 capable DAC of course). This will further strengthen Roon as the pre-eminent user interface.

Streaming: Roon, NUC, QNAP869 NAS
2ch system: Ultra DAC, analogue amps and speakers
Retro system: 101/104/105, analogue speakers

If Quobuz has a better classical catalogue I would seriously consider switching, as I can’t afford two subs, especially if they have a good amount of hi-res and are now cheaper than the equivalent Tidal sub.

My bad

The price for Sublime + (which gives Hi Res Streaming and discounts on Hi Res downloads) has just been reduced to £299.99 pa from £349.99 pa as of 11/10/19 (email to existing subscribers but available to all) but it is still more expensive than TIDAL (by around £60 pa)

With that reduction, it is now tempting, given it’ll be supported by Roon soon. As a non-SE owner, depth of classical catalogue would be more important to me than MQA (especially with Hi-Res files anyway) and I do like to buy and own music still, so the discount would be worth having...

So unless you *need* to pay monthly, Sublime+ is now the same price as the £25/month Studio tier.

Question: Is the Classical offering really that much greater on Qobuz or is this urban myth? Or is it the “Hi-Res” classical catalog that has got everyone excited. I only ask because I’m seeing an awful lot of classical MQA on TIDAL. Still, choice is a good thing!

Impossible to prove one way or the other without a lot of work. Qobuz claim 120,000 High Res albums; TIDAL currently has around 12,500 High Res albums if I understand it correctly.

If you have a scroll through the two services it is fairly obvious which one has the better classical offering - obviously not a scientific method but it is not really close. If you take Herbert von Karajan for example - TIDAL lists around 350 albums, Qobuz 580 albums.

If you look at the Deutsche Grammophon offerings on the two services my impression is that Qobuz is far ahead of TIDAL (although it is impossible to tell how many DG albums are actually on TIDAL). Doubtless there are other examples that "prove" the opposite.

I wonder if MQA List could run a check on both services to give a more scientific analysis?
