I have to say it's one of the crappiest bits of marketing - very "amateur".

M aren't exactly Apple in this respect.
It gets a bit annoying trying to be cool and with it when clearly it's not. There's hardly a million people waiting impatiently...

If you're an indirect brand, with indirect customers, and no longer interested at all in dealing with your customers directly because they are now "clients" of your partners, then stop trying to do consumer marketing... pick one and be it.

If you are a direct to consumer brand then perhaps pick up the phone and offer to help your loyal customers who've spent a shed load of cash over the years when stuff goes wrong rather than palming them off as it's no longer your job.

Someone needs marketing 101 class...

You can't be both.

M Customer since 1991...

Seriously, why is a brand like Meridian using these terrible companies for advertising.
Whats wrong with a Post here. I seriously wonder what the marketing people are doing over at HQ.

I seriousle hope it will be something more fun in the high-end spectrum. Or high quality sound, real updated prime or something. Dare I say MQA board for 861 series? 😃

Maybe its the 210 and they assume that no one knows about it already.

Of course, it may just be another consultancy service or customisation feature like different paint finish.

Just trying to manage my own expectations - which is dangerous as if it doesn't even meet the above its going to be even more depressing...

You think they would have some idea of the target demographic who has Meridian money to spend. This kit is not priced for youngsters. I'm going to guess that the average age on here is somewhere between mid 40's to mid 50's (and I suspect the latter).

So why in goodness' name would you fire an ad campaign out on social media? I neither have, nor want, Twitter, Facebook nor Instagram. But they do have my email address. And what have I heard via email? Not a sausage.

I find teaser campaigns irksome, many of us noted this a few years ago during a previous campaign.

Just tell us what you have, and just as importantly, when it will be available for sale!

George

Good point about the age demographic. Maybe a poll should be taken to collect those data. I would imagine that a vast majority of us are 50 plus.

If you hire a marketing person in 2018, how can you get the word out easily?

1. Do you have a brand forum - Post there!
2. Do you have dealers - Talk to them!
3. Do you email list of all registered kit? Email the owners.
4. Got none of the above, plaster on FB, Linkedin, pressrelease etc. and pray it's not lost in customers and partners feeds.

Thankyou!

Why does it matter, just contact us anyway?
The only recent post I can remember was to say we can't actually watch a potentially useful webinar that was initially advertised as open for all.
Hopeless.

Is it just me...

Instead of being excited at something new from Meridian we're quick to criticise and moan about poor marketing etc. Of course some years ago maybe we'd have known all about this 'new' thing already having been let in on the secret before the public, but those days seem to have long gone.

Of course whatever excitement does exist is tempered by the disappointment we've faced over the last few years where nothing really exciting has come out from Meridian (apart from MQA perhaps; and maybe Roon - both spin-offs). The overwhelming feeling that both multi-channel and Sooloos are getting short thrift in development and a focus on custom install seems to be alienating the 'traditional' Meridian fan (or maybe just those of us left on here).

I hope I'm wrong - I love my Meridian gear and I hope the 'something' is truly great. But as my house rebuild is underway I'm looking at parting with the 861 and going Trinnov for multi-channel with the 271. Fortunately in the rest of the house I'm looking at custom install items so i'm still in the Meridian market but my enthusiasm for Meridian is waning.

Chris

Only things that makes sense to me are stand-mount and sub 'SE' versions, or an 'immersive' processor (but I can't see how you would get >8 discreet channels into it).

Or I'm well off the mark and its something like an Amazon Alexa device - which would at least justify the marketing route shocked !

Hi

I'm over 50, 60 too in fact, and I didn't find the tempter too problematic. A lot of companies like Canon and Nikon do similar things and nobody seems so take umbrage.

Having reached this milestone I have to say 60 ain’t as old as it used to be!

We do use social media (Some of us anyway) It’s the best way to stay in touch with musical artists and what they are up to, that’s for sure.

Teasers do tend to annoy though... running out of time now so just tell me or keep it quiet. I probably can’t really afford it anyway 😂

The world is now a more grumpy place. People are in a constant state of underwhelmed, disappointed, cynical, and (worryingly) more intolerant. Everything seems way more polarized too. Trump hero/idiot, Brexit in/out, MQA great/scam, etc etc.

This forum of 10-15 years ago would never have seen such a reaction as this thread to a teaser. Blame surely cannot be all at M's door here. Other forums are just the same and make for a far less engaging experience. It is a reflection of the state of things.

Just my grumpy 2p worth.

Nick

We have several excellent "retail" dealers who frequent this forum, but the truth is that Meridian isn't a retail company any more. It's just that it would be foolish not to sell existing and new products to those who want them. All of the stuff on social media feels pretty weak to me - I think that teasers are just frustrating and anything but cool - and something to self-justify the marketing function, but I suppose it's important to maintain a brand presence. (Although I would argue that publications like the Robb Report etc. are much better outlets.)

For most of its history, Meridian was basically an unprofitable technology demonstrator, regularly producing products both outstanding and - infuriatingly - with important missing features that any proper product marketing function would have identified.

I'm very glad that Meridian made an operating profit for the first time in a very very long time last year, which I'm sure can be put down to a tighter focus on the CI market and delivering products that the CI market actually wants and needs (including the Design Service). If they can build a long-term successful CI business, then perhaps we will see more in terms of retail products in the future. Let's hope so.

I would like Meridian to follow through on some implicit and "discovered" MQA holes in product for existing customers who placed a *lot* of faith in the company and invested a *lot* of money in "retail" M gear. i.e. a proper MQA solution for the 861, rendering of MQB in *all* of its MQA products, etc. But I'm not holding my breath; we've been waiting long enough. If it happens it happens.

10-15 years ago people in this forum were more likely to give Meridian the benefit of the doubt as the company was more actively engaged with its end users, technologically it still felt at the head of the pack and had a design philosophy guided by Bob Stuart’s understanding of psychoacoustics.

Since then, it feels like the founder has moved on elsewhere to focus on MQA, other contenders for DSP and room correction are eating away at some its unique selling points. It has struggled to adapt to modern home theatre standards where once it was a leader, it now wants to be seen as a custom install company, it has insulated itself from direct interaction with its retail customers and, most importantly, it fails to get products out in a timely manner once announced.

So, understandably, the dance of the seven veils ain’t going to get the blood pumping like it once used to. As ChrisLayerUK points out, we’re all a little older now and have seen it all before; we might just nod off before M whips away that last veil.

As a point of comparison, Nikon did its teaser campaign for the Z7 in August, announced delivery for September 27th, and followed through to the day. Enjoying mine at the moment.

Love my Meridian gear and have no intention of changing it, I’m just suggesting that the lack of enthusiasm (grumpiness if you will) isn’t primarily a sign of our polarised times. BTW, Trump hero/idiot, Brexit in/out, MQA great/scam . wink

I'm 50+ and, like James Bond, I'm growing old but not up :O)

The problem with teasers from M is that it implies that they are unaware that the general hifi community no longer wait with bated breath for their 'cutting-edge' announcements (the original tweet has 5(!) likes).

This is partly their own doing as a result of no interaction with their biggest fans (here) and simple facts like, MQA apart, there has been no firmware update for the 'flagship' 861 since August 2014; hence many potential customers have become quite cynical to their announcements.

The disappointing HD722 didn’t help either.

I think that "something" will be an Explorer3.

But "something" could be a new range of DSP SE Ultras, with new DACs derived from the Ultra DAC.

Not useful for me (I'm squarely in the Apple universe), but might be of interest to others.

That said, MQA for 861's would have been 11,000% more welcome.

Okay, I'm going to surprise you all by saying that I am actually pretty interested in this!

I'd heard that the LG v40 was being announced today, and that it has wide, normal and tele camera modules. Yup, it's still smartphone photography, but they are as good as £200 compact cameras were just a few years back.

I heard the LG G6 Korean version with "quad DAC" earlier this year, which I thought was exceptionally good, so Meridian adding special sauce means this will most likely be my next phone...sooner rather than later!

Cheers

George, the sell out... grin

I'm guessing that what we're seeing is not in the context of marketing strategy. That would imply that there is a high-enough volume brand-recognition path from a $900 phone or soundbar to Meridian's $5,000 processors, $15,000 stereo speakers, or custom install systems to make these LG projects be economically worthwhile. That seems unlikely to me. I looked at 6 reviews of the LG V40 at prominent review/media sites and not a single one mentioned Meridian.

That leaves me believing that Meridian has decided that their ability to improve other firm's value-based offerings will bring in more revenue and/or profit than staying purely at the high-end. This seems likely to delay important updates and advances at the high end, but could provide margin needed to get back to those things in the long term.

I don't know nearly enough about their business to evaluate if this is a good move, but it sure is a frustrating one for me. They appear to be working on soundbars and phones instead of MQA, updated RC, updated codec support, etc.

Well I think that is proof of further diversification for Meridian into product and service areas and demographics that is wider than many on here are interested in. It has diluted the interest in Meridian for moany (Freudian slip) here that, if it ensures the long term of Meridian, we just have to accept and take any product launch that is of interest to us, as a bonus.

So, the something new has arrived - shame it's from LG and not Meridian.

(As an aside, I'm I the only one thinking that the prices of smart phones have got truly silly.)

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

No you are not alone, I seem to recall reading LG has representation on Meridians board? I wouldn’t be surprised to see LG take a controlling stake in the near future.
My interest in Meridian is based around products they produce that I am interested in purchasing, if they are not doing that then their prosperity / survival is not especially relevant to me.

Apple used to make desktop computers…

If Meridian’s getting revenue from the LG products, it may be the lifeline that keeps them going.

The LG website press release of the new phone makes no mention of Meridian anywhere that I can see (I looked on the LG website).
Maybe Meridian should have asked for a small acknowledgement!

Am more than happy for them to diversify if it secures the future of the company ... but please not to forget what we here see as the core offering.

The release notes on DPReview (photography forum), mention Meridian ...
Quote:
LG has always prioritized high fidelity audio in its smartphones and the LG V40 ThinQ is no exception, being the first LG phone to carry the Audio Tuned by Meridian label. The 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC produces a balanced sound signature that comes extremely close to the quality of an original recording. And Boombox Speaker, originally introduced on the LG G7 ThinQ, doubles the bass of conventional smartphone speakers by utilizing the internal space of the device as a resonance chamber. When placed on a solid surface or hollow box, the LG V40 ThinQ acts like a woofer to amplify the bass even more.

I must have missed a technology break through somewhere along the line, so now I can chuck all the old Meridian stuff away and just need to buy an LG V40 and put it on a carboard box to get "a balanced sound signature that comes extremely close to the quality of an original recording" wow and for less than £1000. Also I can put it in my car so dont need a Jag or RR for Meridian sound

You missed that huge thread a while back? It's not any old cardboard, it's Meridian's tri-laminated "Cardboardium".

Cheers

Damn, not yet another mobile phone, I hate them. I have been a happy Prime DAC + PSU user but I would welcome an upgrade. And no, Ultra is too expensive for me. If Sony TA-ZH1ES had MQA (stupid Sony) I would have already got it. Meridian is/always was too "elite" and I guess it is by plan. Between a couple of entry-level products (e.g. the explorer) you go directly to Jaguars and houses for millionaires; the middle is mostly ignored.

How likely do we think this is? It might dictate whether I sell my 861v4 or get it fixed. Of course, any such card might not work on a v4 anyway and just be limited to v6 or v8.

I think that's a given. In fact, would probably be for v8 only (if I was a betting man).
