The world is now a more grumpy place. People are in a constant state of underwhelmed, disappointed, cynical, and (worryingly) more intolerant. Everything seems way more polarized too. Trump hero/idiot, Brexit in/out, MQA great/scam, etc etc.

This forum of 10-15 years ago would never have seen such a reaction as this thread to a teaser. Blame surely cannot be all at M's door here. Other forums are just the same and make for a far less engaging experience. It is a reflection of the state of things.

Just my grumpy 2p worth.

Rgds,
Nick

The Meridian of 10-15 years ago would not not have got such a reaction, times change I guess.

We have several excellent "retail" dealers who frequent this forum, but the truth is that Meridian isn't a retail company any more. It's just that it would be foolish not to sell existing and new products to those who want them. All of the stuff on social media feels pretty weak to me - I think that teasers are just frustrating and anything but cool - and something to self-justify the marketing function, but I suppose it's important to maintain a brand presence. (Although I would argue that publications like the Robb Report etc. are much better outlets.)

For most of its history, Meridian was basically an unprofitable technology demonstrator, regularly producing products both outstanding and - infuriatingly - with important missing features that any proper product marketing function would have identified.

I'm very glad that Meridian made an operating profit for the first time in a very very long time last year, which I'm sure can be put down to a tighter focus on the CI market and delivering products that the CI market actually wants and needs (including the Design Service). If they can build a long-term successful CI business, then perhaps we will see more in terms of retail products in the future. Let's hope so.

I would like Meridian to follow through on some implicit and "discovered" MQA holes in product for existing customers who placed a *lot* of faith in the company and invested a *lot* of money in "retail" M gear. i.e. a proper MQA solution for the 861, rendering of MQB in *all* of its MQA products, etc. But I'm not holding my breath; we've been waiting long enough. If it happens it happens.

Linn and Naim at least provided photographs of their forthcoming products when they teased the Selekt and Uniti kit.

10-15 years ago people in this forum were more likely to give Meridian the benefit of the doubt as the company was more actively engaged with its end users, technologically it still felt at the head of the pack and had a design philosophy guided by Bob Stuart’s understanding of psychoacoustics.

Since then, it feels like the founder has moved on elsewhere to focus on MQA, other contenders for DSP and room correction are eating away at some its unique selling points. It has struggled to adapt to modern home theatre standards where once it was a leader, it now wants to be seen as a custom install company, it has insulated itself from direct interaction with its retail customers and, most importantly, it fails to get products out in a timely manner once announced.

So, understandably, the dance of the seven veils ain’t going to get the blood pumping like it once used to. As ChrisLayerUK points out, we’re all a little older now and have seen it all before; we might just nod off before M whips away that last veil.

As a point of comparison, Nikon did its teaser campaign for the Z7 in August, announced delivery for September 27th, and followed through to the day. Enjoying mine at the moment.

Love my Meridian gear and have no intention of changing it, I’m just suggesting that the lack of enthusiasm (grumpiness if you will) isn’t primarily a sign of our polarised times. BTW, Trump hero/idiot, Brexit in/out, MQA great/scam . wink

I'm 50+ and, like James Bond, I'm growing old but not up :O)

The problem with teasers from M is that it implies that they are unaware that the general hifi community no longer wait with bated breath for their 'cutting-edge' announcements (the original tweet has 5(!) likes).

This is partly their own doing as a result of no interaction with their biggest fans (here) and simple facts like, MQA apart, there has been no firmware update for the 'flagship' 861 since August 2014; hence many potential customers have become quite cynical to their announcements.

The disappointing HD722 didn’t help either.

I think that "something" will be an Explorer3.

But "something" could be a new range of DSP SE Ultras, with new DACs derived from the Ultra DAC.
