I have been collecting mostly brand new vinyl records (second phase of my vinyl collection) for around 10 years or so now. I first collected as a teenager beginning in the late 1970s with my paper round / pocket money buying a different used album from the same store every week for around 10 years. Only to give the lot away to the local hospice in the early 2000s (probably over 2000 very collectable albums - he sighs!!, but such is life).

Anyways back to my question. All of the albums I’ve bought since resuming afresh I have bought twice (one to play and one to keep in case I scratch by accident the play copy). I have around 300 albums now and have the same albums as backups still in the shrink wrapping sealed untouched and unopened in flight cases. I read that leaving them in this shrink wrap can lead to the covers being bent due to the shrinkwrap shrinking.

I’m a bit reluctant to open these second copies as some for example Becks - pink Vinyl MFSL sea change have gone through the roof value wise. I have many similar valued albums which cost me say £35 ten years ago and are now valued at £200 or more. Anyone have any comments about this shrinkwrap issue and any advice as to what I should do?. Sealed or not sealed?. What are your thoughts on modern shrink wrapping and potential damage to albums or album covers?

Thanks

PS I do like to look at the ones factory fresh though it is sort of a secondary hobby now, but I also enjoy playing the main copies.

As a side note I bought the new Biffy Clyro unplugged last week and with it being a double LP the shrink seems to bend the cover in at the insert side, only being relaxed by cutting the shrink with a Stanley blade etc.

When I bought many albums in the ‘70s I loathed shrink-wrapped Vinyl, as the record was always full of static when unwrapped. I owned/used a ‘zapp’ anti-static gun to reduce such problems.

I always kept my Vinyl collection in non-static rigid plastic sleeves.
