Heading up this system is the Ultra. Cracking front end for many systems. Especially if we are talking analogue... (more to come on that!)

We are using 4 Meridian 857s.

Wiring - UD > Nautilus X-over > 857 & 857 > Nautilus Speaker.

Each 857 is running in stereo. One power amplifier driving the 2 upper drivers. Another driving the lower mid and LFU.

Sounding super sweet this morning....

Ian

I assume your cryptic reference to analogue means that you have the turntable running through the Ultra? I have to say a Phono card and a general Analogue input card for the Ultra would be a big step forward, even if they are in effect only A to D convertors.

Is the demonstration appointment only or can one just turn up?

You can indeed just arrive any day. However the Wednesday is an appointment only event. Set times.

Some clients have booked times on other days, to ensure theres a space.....but of course - just arrive!

Cheers,
Ian

The analogue route looks like it is Turntable to conventional Phono Stage to Meridian 818v3 to Meridian Ultra rather than a new A to D card for the Ultra.

Ian, my "Lovely setup" wasn't really enthusiastic enough!

As far as I'm aware, the Nautilus system hasn't been updated during its lifespan (I could obviously be wrong); how would it compare with, say, the latest 800Ds?

Shame I'm not a little closer...

Folks,

I had the pleasure of listening to this system yesterday and it was wonderful. Ian kindly let me listen to various Tidal MQA tracks from The Prodigal Son, Ry Cooder’s latest album which I know well from home listening on my 7200SE. Ry recorded this with his son over just a few days and so it contains simple clear lead and backing vocals, guitar and percussion. It was an absolute pleasure to hear with very natural placement and shape of vocals and instruments in front of me. If you get the chance go have a listen!

So, what did it sound like? Do the Nautilus speakers still hold their own in the world given advances in speaker technology and drivers that B&W have made since the Nautilus was released?

I have to say, being a B&W fan, I'd be fascinated to hear both the Nautilus and the Matrix 800. Now that's a speaker with physical presence! It would be interesting to compare the Matrix 800 with the Duntech Sovereign. I'm surprised B&W didn't keep on making the Matrix 800 as their top of the range ultimate speaker. (See Stereophile review of B&W Matrix 800 if you're interested in reading about these amazing speakers).

I have an interest in D'Appolito layout speakers as I run my front B&W DM2 MkII speakers stacked in a D'Appolito configuration. Sound quality is definitely far more than the sum of parts, and they image perfectly using the LEDR (Listening Environment Diagnostic Recording) imaging tests.

Ali.

Ali, I'd asked earlier in the thread about how the Nautilus might compare with the latest 800Ds so it'd be great to get an answer from Martins who run both systems (I believe).

Matrix 800? When I read the name I assumed that was the earliest version of the 800 but I clicked on the link & found an entirely different beast & one that I've never come across before. Unlikely to be chosen by the fairer sex I suspect but they are quite something aren't they? Thanks for posting.

As an aside, are there ANY ladies on the forum? Or are they too busy pursuing their own hobbies?

The Matrix800 brochure can be downloaded Here..

I'd love to know how many they sold and why they discontinued it instead of developing it further.

HERE is a photo of the Matrix 800 at Abbey Road Studios. Apparently the photo was taken in 2008 which would mean that Abbey Road have a pair of Matrix 800's in their store room . . . smile

One problem I have with B&W speakers is if they are so good them why do they keep revising them? I've lost count of the number of times the 800 series have been revised. Why would someone buy a pair only for them to become second rate after a few years? Call me sceptical but I suspect it has more to do with marketing. Is each generation really much better than the last, or just different? At least the Nautilus has remained consistent over the years. If B&W have really made the advances in technology they claim, then by now wouldn't the Nautilus be an embarrassment to them instead of still being "as near as possible, the perfect loudspeaker" as their website says?

Ali.

Thanks all for the messages and feedback. Apolgies for not replying sooner, with all our events being planned - time just runs aways…!

It’s fair to say that the Nautilus still hold their own with respect to being an engineering statement and musical communicator, and they have certainly provided the direction from which each of B&W's other ranges have borrowed a number of key technologies, such as the Nautilus tapered tube for the tweeters, used on a large percentage of thier products.

The Nautilus still remains special amongst B&W's speaker line-up, and combines the right ingredients and recipe for delivering the musical content that sounds so right, tangible and real, offering a presence and insight that can often be lost in passive speakers. One of the many beauties of the Nautilus is the coherency and close knitting of each individual drive unit to produce what could be perceived as a single point source, this is a consequence of using aluminium drive-unit material throughout the entire musical spectrum, together with a cabinet so free from audible colouration that the music just “hangs” in space. There is a great sense of air and spatial cues together with a transparency that delivers an uncannily realistic focus, imaging & soundscape, offering a huge sense of scale that can really captivate the listener. Layer upon layer of musical content is presented so correctly that everything else could be perceived as being only a mere rendition of the original.

Admittedly, the current 800 Series D3 has really closed that gap between a passive speaker and what the active Nautilus is capable-of, indeed the diamond dome tweeter is leagues ahead of what the Nautilus employs, the continuum cone has blended into one-cone what the Nautilus covers with two drive units, and the bass on the 800’s is undeniably quicker, with more “slam” and impact with use of the Aerofoil cones and a ported enclosure.

Ultimately the differences between the 800 Series and The Nautilus are in delivery, presentation & scale, they both have their merits, in differing areas, it’s then a case of which performance the listener prefers, or how deep your pockets!

Cheers,
Ian.
