Hi All,

This may represent itself as a daft question, but its one that the manual doesn't really clear up and something id like to figure out before I delve too deep.

I have a G95 at present, which does a fine job as the centre of my hifi and home cinema. I connect a Mac Mini up via optical at 24/96 and it blissfully switches between stereo and 5.1 automatically with the G95 playing ball at all times. Generally I'm very happy with how this all works.

I'd like to add a subwoofer to the setup, but here's were it gets confusing.

Meridians bass management allows you only to specify basic large/small settings.

Many suggest that where your main channels are not able to go hugely low (I have compact floorstanders) that you should just choose "small" and let bass management take care of it.

The problem here, is that it seems the G95 doesn't have any kind of bypass mode, to stop bass being sent to the subwoofer for stereo only playback.

Does the G95 treat "stereo" as a 2.1 setup when mains are set to "small" or in stereo does it ignore the subwoofer and run the fronts full range?

Any ideas?

Are you configuring it from the front panel or the mconfig program, sometimes the mconfig offers more options or at least presents them in an easier to read format.

All done via the on screen system. It doesn't seem to have any more advanced info than the front panel.

really just trying to work out why the G95 doesn't seem to have a "direct" or "bypass" method like the older amps did

The manual seems to suggest stereo is two channel plus sub as below, I never had G95 but on my 861 I had there was a direct mode does the G95 have something similar?

For two-channel audio formats the DSP preset can usually be switched between Trifield (recommended for music), Stereo (uses just the main left and right speakers and subwoofer), or PLII (recommended for movies), using the DSP key on the front panel or the supplied MSR+ infrared learning remote.

Sadly not. Which is a shame.

Means I have to run the fronts as Large, which for some more aggressive soundtracks, they may not be entirely happy with!

If you have the fronts set to small and for stereo that works then one clunky option is to add the sub but physically turn it off for music listening?

Not sure that would work

if you set the fronts to small in the Meridian setup, everything below 80hz is automatically routed to the sub. Which I wouldn't want, as the speakers will do 40hz or so on their own, and id rather they ran full range for music.

Realistically the only solution is to run the fronts as Large, so that in stereo, the sub doesn't even come on.

Ok, looks like there is no solution, maybe Rick at Audio Images has some thoughts?

Reminds me of getting my G91 and discovering a lack of certain music modes including Trifield if I recall.

When it was working, I routinely played music on my G95 in 2.1: and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I would not be put off using a sub for music.

Most rooms are far easier to get a flat sweep when using a sub, room nodes in that 70Hz region are normally because the main speakers are opposite you, remove that bass and put a sub in and 9 times out of 10 you get a much better result.

No Darling, I've had it months!

I guess in this instance it certainly takes the guesswork out of blending speakers and sub in a traditional sense, as the amplifier is handling the crossover slopes above and below 80Hz.

Just seems quite high to cross over, when my main speakers extend down to about 45Hz give or take.

That said, my room is problematic below about 50Hz, but sub placement may not suit that.

In a 100% ideal world, the Meridian would feature adjustable crossover for different channels, like some of the higher end processors, then I could choose to run mains at nearer 50-60Hz.
