Anyone watch the England match in UHD via BBC iPlayer?

Didn’t make it easier to watch just more detail...

There are mixed reviews on the quality of the BBC trial picture quality.

I thought it was far too dark, the match during the day anyway, went back to HD for the England game.

Problem with HDR for me is, to get the contrast, if there is a really bright area on screen they will reduce the other areas to give you the dynamic range. That is fine for films etc. but not when watching a match during the day.
Where the light poured into the stadium on the crowd it was really bright, but then the pitch which was under shadow just looked dark and gloomy.
Put HD back on and OK, everything was less dynamic but at least the image popped in the area I wanted to watch, ie the players rather than the top tier of the crowd.

Not being able to control contrast etc. under HDR is a pain for these type of events imho.

UHD Picture was fine for me on 65” LG OLED, no issues with the streaming either, I do have fibre to the house though.

I worked with this guy on a couple of OB (outside broadcast) sports projects. What Nic doesn't know about Sports OB is not worth knowing.
I thought Nic's article on LinkedIn about UHD and HDR was enlightening.

He could have helped them last night, they had real issues controlling changes in contrast/luminance, seemed the cameras couldn't handle it.

I know it wasn't the cameras as it happened on more than one camera.

Didn’t they say during the match that was a general broadcast issue rather than a UHD issue?

Yeah I presume so, I just meant if that guy knows all there is to know about OB it is a shame he was not in Russia.

Pictures from these things are typically supplied by the host broadcaster(s) so most TV networks will have no control over the quality of the feed - apart from the flicker reported, the font used by the host broadcasters (im guessing its the host broadcaster as in my day in BBC Graphic Design, the BBC would never have agreed to that font) is also awful and difficult to read some letters. BBC will have had no control over this output, but would, depending on where their main operations are, take the host feeds and overlay their own info. I suspect however, due to cost cutting, that BBC's main control is back in UK so they would have very little choice in what they have available for transmission.

However, it is possible that special outputs, such as UHD experiments, are done by the broadcasters involved in the trial.

Its early days and options are probably limited from Russia, so the ones that would be worth looking at are UK based events - Wimbledon was always a favorite for the BBC to bring new things to.

FWIW, apparently Nic was working on the ITV studio in Russia, so nothing to do with BBC or UHD on this occasion unless BBC and ITV were in collaboration with UHD trials.

Just watching the Columbia v Japan match and the UHD picture is very good.
