You could take it for a drive to Sheffield and see Rick at audio images I’m sure he could make it less hassle, seeing as your Mac.

@Zygmunt

Can I ask please?, I was thinking of ordering the same drive from China but the firmware I can see says 7.9 on the drive on the eBay listing, mine is firmware 7.32 would this discrepancy make a difference to installation or will the 596 accept any firmware on the ROM drive as long as it’s the correct drive ie, exactly the same as removed.

Thanks in advance and thanks to all who have responded and helped this far.

You may have to update your 598 to the latest firmware to say anything conclusive about the drive's reliability, as it adds support for DRL200 and apparently a few other drives unintentionally in its wake, from my experience.

I ordered a DSL720A from China via aliexpress, with a newer firmware than the original drive. My 596 is running 1.89.2 and detects it as a DRL200 and it works fine apart from a few caveats:

The drive opens and closes much slower than the factory default drive, and it is slower to load media.

The drive is constantly spinning while in standby. I have been told by Meridian that this is to be expected as the firmware isn't fully compliant with the 598/596 but is otherwise fully functional. I was warned though that this causes unneeded wear and tear to the drive, but I'm just happy it works again.

I have not had trouble playing back any types of media, both CD, DVD and CDs containing MPEG files play flawlessly.

If it is reporting it as a dlr-200 then it won't be a dsl-720a

Good that you got it working.

I've replaced two drives now, one on a 598 and one on a 596 and neither span continuously. I must have been lucky.

I don't know (yet). While the (DSL-720A) drive has arrived from China, the demands of the Beloved Client have so far stopped me from installing it, as I do need to be in the same country as my studio!

I promise to write up my experience with the 596 as soon as I update it.

I would like to think that the firmware ( internal to the drive has no relevance at all ), to the Meridian software that’s installed, obviously these machines according to the Bob Stuart Question and Answer of many Moons ago said that it was a modular design which to me should mean that faulty products can be removed and replaced with little troubles. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you can take the drive out slide identical drive in without event.
