I have removed all of the analogue cards and the video section card and with only the digital card in it
the 861 runs now for hours without problems.

Maybe the old power supply can’t manage so many cards, but when it runs with the IE42 it can’t be damaged.

So I will sell all cards which I don’t need.

Don't be too hasty with all the cards. First do check the output voltage of your power supply. As has been advised to you already, it needs setting to 5.2volts and they don't come from the supplier like that.

The Meridian Tech Note requires that and I would not be surprised if your dealer overlooked it. And if you can spare the time do try the patient one at a time re-insertion of the cards (after checking the supply voltage).

It might just be one card but my money is still on the power supply - perhaps just the voltage adjustment.

Niklas, I have found some technical information that you may find useful - I knew I had it but many of our possessions are in store while we have moved out of our house for a comprehensive refurbishment and so I wasn't sure I could find it. I'll send by PM so I hope it gets through as an attachment (it is a PDF). It doesn't just cover the 800 series but that comes first. Nick

Niklas, As is often the case, the PM system has defeated me (my shortcomings) as I couldn't see how to add a PDF as an attachment. I have sent you an email instead. Nick

Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately I don’t know whether audio reference made some mistakes in changing the PSU but I can’t measure it and I can’t change or remove parts.

It should be the original Meridian Version. The display vanished again and something is wrong with my 861.

Rick needs 300£ for a new PSU...

What do I need for the measurements of the output voltage and how can I do the procedure myself?

Niklas, Pages 1 and 2 of what I sent you say what needs to be done, but it does require some confidence and care with electronics as the voltage check has to be done with the case of the 861 removed (and perhaps the protective box of the power supply itself, I can't remember) and the mains connected. Danger of death!!

The tools for the voltage check are just a voltage meter (a basic multimeter - only £10 in the UK) and a small screwdriver. However, if you are not comfortable doing it (and why would you be - not many people have hobbies like mine) then you need a trusted dealer (Rick is outstanding) or a good friend. We have several German friends whom we normally visit in the summer (by car), but we are not doing it this year because of our major house rebuild, otherwise I could have called in on you on our way to Nueremburg and done it for you - sorry about that.

A new power supply (not a linear one) is only about £40 but a voltage check is still needed and the all important DS1813 voltage watchdog IC in place of a capacitor on the switch board should be fitted. This last item should have been done by your dealer but may well not have been and can certainly lead to instabilities if not done - especially with an older 861 with an aged capacitor.

It is fiddly to get at the relevant circuit board and with the time and materials taken into account (the DS1813 itself is cheap), as well as overheads, Rick's price doesn't look unreasonable (provided he guarantees the result!). I don't know whether Rick's price includes shipping from you to him, but as a quantity user of shipping he will get much better prices than you can so, if you have to cover the cost of sending the unit to him separately, explore with him whether he can send you a shipping label for the Germany to UK segment - that will depend on the shipper he normally uses.

Do you ever come to London...? Nick

Now Audio Reference confirmed that they have changed the power supply and with all measurements and specifications made by Meridian.

I have a 818 now and I must say that an old 861 is sonically not far away from this new Reference...

Did they confirm what they changed the power supply with? The latest recommended switched mode (as opposed to linear) supply is by XP Power. Occasionally, even new supplies can fail quite quickly, especially if you have a faulty card (hence the recommendations from various people, all good advice, in this thread).

This solved my instability issues in the past.
