Is the new Meridian DSP5200.2 equipped with the same tweeter as the DSP5200SE and how would you rate the tonal differences?

Has anyone compared these two boxes?

Both boxes have the 1 x 25mm (1”) Meridian piston in short horn, beryllium dome with silver voice-coil.

The 5200.2s don't have beryllium tweeters, they're a composite dome. Only the SE speakers have beryllium.

Sorry. See the Meridian webside. The new version .2 has the beryllium tweeter also and I asked Audio Reference and they confirmed it.

Hi

I've just had a look at the Meridian 5200.2 website page, and the 5200.2 datasheet, and both say "advanced composite dome tweeter".

It wouldn't be the first time that there have been "discrepancies" on the datasheets, but it does strike me that the beryllium tweeter is a sensible differentiating factor in the hierarchy between models.

Cheers
George

Sorry but I’m almost sure that’s not correct. I believe that’s a misprint on the Meridian website (which also describes the 5200.2 tweeter as both ‘composite’, ‘aluminium’).

One of the key differentiators between the .2 versions and SE of any flavour is the beryllium tweeter. If this has changed, it would be big news, and also I’d like to know!

Perhaps others can confirm...?

George,

The Meridian website does mention beryllium once (under the heading of tweeter spec. which ironically also specifies its aluminium). Seems, as you say, like one of those classic Meridian marketing copy/paste errors.

A dealer confirming it’s beryllium is more worrying.

O/P I strongly believe that the .2 tweeter is the same composite type used in the other .2 DSPs (7200.2, 8000.2).

I guess this statement on the DSP5200.2 Meridian page is what’s causing confusion.
Quote:
ALUMINIUM TWEETER
1 x 25mm (1”) Meridian piston in short horn, beryllium dome with silver voice-coil
Reminiscent of the 218 linear power supply frown

Ah, I looked at the Meridian mobile version of the site on my phone, may be different on that.

Cheers

I thought the beryllium tweeter was a differentiator between SE and non SE versions and required SE electronics, are the .2 and SE’s using the same cabinets and tweeters with the same or slightly different electronics, Mon dieu shocked

Why not do away with the SE and .2 versions and just have one version that can handle MQA rendering, seems they are 2/3 of the way there, it would simplify manufacturing and parts logistics and they might even be able to reduce the price?

I believe a dealer said 80% of sales were SE anyway.

As previously posted I was confused on this subject. Unfortunately I am now confused at a much higher level.

I’m 99% certain the 5200.2 doesn’t have a beryllium tweeter. It’s a typo and the dealer has regurgitated it.

The Meridian webpage describes the 5200.2 tweeter, variously, as
Quote:
Advanced, high-efficiency composite dome tweeter.
And
Quote:
ALUMINIUM TWEETER 1 x 25mm (1”) Meridian piston in short horn, beryllium dome with silver voice-coil.
So, all three types ever used by Meridian.

Since they haven’t used all three, at least two of these are typos. Since the Be tweeter is the main upgrade to SE and since we know all other .2 do use composite tweeters, the likelihood is that Beryllium is the typo.

OTOH, if they do have a Be tweeter at that price, I’ll be ordering a pair, so happy to be proved wrong grin

[edit: Meridian do have typo form on the 5200, iirc a while back there was some excitement that the SE had Meridium panels, until Rick confirmed no 5200 has and that it was still reserved for 7200 and 8000].
