Hi

I have had the prime headphone amp/DAC for quite some time and am really happy with it. I have an opportunity to buy the separate power supply at a reasonable cost but would welcome views as to whether it's really worth it and whether I will hear anything different for the outlay?

Would welcome any advice please. Thank you.

Make sure that you listen to it before taking it away - some of them hum but are apparently within spec so not faulty.

There is a good offer at The Integrated Home just to give you some guidance. I have no connection with The Integrated Home.

Thank you I will bear both of those in mind.

In terms of the upgrade in performance, I have read many reviews that it makes the already excellent PHA even better.

I note that you have one - can you offer a view as to the degree of improvement in the PHA with/without the PSU?

Thank you.

Hi PRQ
There are two excellent reviews of the Prime HPA by VirusKiller on this forum.
Original review, Post No 201389
Update with Prime PSU, Post No 206721.

I use Prime + Prime PSU fed from 808v6 analogue out. Headphones are Grado GS 1000 and in my opinion the PSU does make a difference.
Why would Meridian produce it if it was not going to provide an improvement?
I do not use USB feed.

I do not have a problem with a hum as experienced by Ian. Before purchasing agree with the seller that if it does not improve the sound or exhibits a hum they will give you a full refund.

Thanks Hector. I now have serious headphone envy...

I will be using the PHA/PSU with an iMac for desktop headphone listening so (unless there is another way to do it??) then I am stuck with the USB feed in sadly.

That's part of the reason for wanting the PSU really, to lower the potential noise floor as low as possible. That said, I have been mightily impressed with the PHA as a standalone unit.

Alas, because of the hum, I have not used them since Meridian said they were within spec.

They did offer me a long interconnect lead between the two (at the expense of not returning the standard short cable which no longer means they do not stack neatly) but even that is not long enough to place the PSU out of hums way.

The whole experience left a rather bitter taste - really cannot believe that Meridian believe that hum at 2m away is within acceptable specification. But at least they replaced the first one that I could hear from outside the room.

Having helped Ian test his PSU side by side with mine I can confirm that his unit really does hum.

It is a shame as there is no way, IMHO, that it can be within an acceptable spec.

Very odd position for HQ to take there.

I was about to go for one of these with the current TIH offer, but now I'm not so sure with those reports of hum (pet hate) - I don't need the USB section as it'll be only for amp duty out of the 818v3. Maybe I'll go for a Violectric, or something, instead...

I took the plunge and ordered one. If it hums it'll distract the noise from SWMBO eek

I used to connect my Stax to the balanced out of my 818v3, I would save the cost of the Prime and get Stax headphones grin

Fair point. I haven’t heard Stax myself, but have heard they lean towards brightness confused

Prime PSU received today and on as I type. It's as good as I had hoped for and not a hum to be heard....

I have the bug now and plan to demo a 218/5200 setup in the next month or so. If it sounds as good as the quality coming out of the Prime then it's a likely purchase.
