I just bought a Berkeley Alpha DAC Series 2 with MQA.

I'd like to try bypassing the 218 DAC using the 218 RCA digital Aux out to the Berkeley. No one seems to know exactly what that output does but assuming it's the same as the SpeakerLink outputs.

I can let the 218 do the first MQA unfold and send it along to the Berkeley for DAC and rendering. If it doesn't do the first MQA unfold I can set Roon to do it and can I assume the 218 would pass that signal along for DAC and rendering as it would to SE speakers? In that case in Roon would I set the 218 as No MQA Support or Renderer only?

Set it as renderer only I would expect. It should just pass through.

Assume your DAC is not network capable directly ? Less boxes would be better I expect.

I've been up and running for a few days with the Berkeley DAC and 218.

As we know the 218 won't allow Roon to unfold MQA and anything else to render. But I'm curious why the 218 requires the 2 x box to be checked in order for it to process MQA at all. I'd rather run 1 x and let the Berkeley "interpolate" as they call it.

Any ideas?

I'm taking it that the 2x box is the upsampling that is effectively the rendering stage.

The 2x box is the first unfold stage.
