Does anyone wish to share meanings of error codes on display of 200 transport. For example, drawer closes, then "play" results in err 5.1 and CD does not spin.

Bad laser assembly.

Actual laser or PCB with electronics?

USUALLY....

It is the actual laser assy, but it can be the servo driver on the servo board, if it is the board it is not repairable as the parts cannot be had for love or money.

Thank you for the info. I am going to try laser lens cleaning first, then visual verification of laser beam. Upon removal of laser assembly, I will try to find replacement. Do you know if laser assembly is CDM4/19 or something else?

Does anyone have info on laser assembly and perhaps where to obtain one for Meridian 200?

While focus and tracking motion were observed, no laser beam was detected.
I have disassembled unit and confirmed laser assembly is swing arm Philips CDM4/19.
Replacement ordered from Taiwan.

This is a Meridian 200 CD Transport, Serial No: 200 203273

The 200 transport has been successfully repaired. The CDM4/19 from Taiwan was an exact replacement. There are no physical adjustments required and the single potentiometer was NOT changed.

When a CD is loaded, pressing "play" results in a momentary display of 5. 1, then as disk spins display shows track number and time. I believe the 5 represents no focus and the 1 is the first tract number.

When there is no CD, pressing "play" results in a display of 5.1, followed by "Err" on display.

So with a defective laser assembly, there was no focus signal, therefore display of 5. 1 then Err and no spinning of CD.

Thanks for the help from everyone.

A 561 was used to accept the digital output from the 200.

Many thanks for sharing with us all the conclusion of your endeavours. Whether successful or not it is so useful to know the outcome of analysis and attempted cure so we can all learn.

The endeavour was quite successful. Everything is working correctly. I thought someone would like to know what laser assembly was used and actually how simple it is to replace one. The challenge was on reassembly, trying to remember sequence and which of 30+ screws to use. I don't take notes or take pictures.

Only 5 years ago I also did not take pictures, though I might have laid out screws in a logical manner and even sellotaped them to a piece of paper for ease of moving them for safekeeping. Now I have to take pictures AND use sellotape...

By the way, your post illustrates a subtle difference between American English and English English which I stumbled across about 25 years ago. In American, 'quite' always seems to mean 'very'. In English English it can mean both 'very' and 'not so very'. If someone asks me what I thought of the opera last night and I answer that it was 'quite splendid' I mean very splendid. If I say 'quite good' I mean not very good! I assume that when you say 'quite successful' you mean very successful. An English person might mean it was pretty good but not as good as they would have liked. I quite like that difference between the two languages.
