Both my ID40 and 218 Sooloos end-points randomly show up in Meridian Sooloos configuration with 169.254.yyy.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx (which is what my DHCP server provides), and sometimes with the expected IP address, but only briefly and can't be selected in the tool to change properties.

One thing in particular this is preventing me from doing is updating the firmware of the ID40 to the latest.

Any ideas what I could try?

Check why they are loosing 24/7 connection to your DHCP server, such as network components going in standby mode.

Last resort is static IP mode but that is just hiding an underlying issue.

169.254 is referred to as an APIPA address typically assigned when your device can not contact your DHCP server, is this happening on power up or not? Setting a fixed IP may fix it but not if you have an underlying network connectivity issue, what is the layout of your network, the best way to trouble shoot networks is to go back to basics disconnect everything and start with just the router connected. If you are using your router as a switch you might want to use a network switch.

My post and Ian’s crossed....

Changing router to a current one could actually help. What router model and version are you running?

I have a Verizon Quantum Gateway router which connects to my QNAP NAS on one ethernet port and serves as a DHCP server on my switch which is connected to another ethernet port. My Sooloos end-points are all connected to that same switch.

Today the ID40 seems more stable but the Meridian Sooloos Configuration still can't make a connection to it, let alone update the firmware.

Is it possible to use the USB connection on the card to update it?

Are you using wired connections everywhere? I have successfully used wireless connections when I have got everything settled down (latest updates etc) but, as Meridian/Sooloos advise, I would at least temporarily do all connections hard wired (and check cables/plugs are all good) to reduce network problems to a minimum. And if you are hard wired check that switch is of good quality.

Thanks. Yes, everything is wired and everything is on the same switch.

The switch is a Cisco Nexus 3172 which I think should be of good quality.

I was able to change the ID40 from DHCP to static using its webpage and that seems stable now. However I can still not update the firmware using the Meridian Sooloos Configure application.

I suspect the switch is the problem. It looks to be a complex managed switch. You will probably need to find out, if it is possible, how to enable igmp snooping - which may or may not solve the issue even then as these things are so complex and designed for network engineers to configure.

Or probably easier to get a basic unmanaged switch such as a netgear GS108 (not the smart version) that you dedicate to Sooloos. A case of less is more.

I agree with Ian plus that switch is an $5000+ item! I used one of these Cisco 8 port unmanaged switches when I had Sooloos which worked perfectly.

Your switch is indeed very sophisticated and when I said good quality what I really meant was working properly!

I have had complete success with very basic switches and the only warning about those is that they are prone to (plug adapter type) power supply failure or, worse, instability. That is easily eliminated by swapping the power supply.

In your case, you might still have a (internal to the unit) power supply issue but you can't easily check that and besides, as has already been said, the very sophistication of the switch may be against you. I would fully support the suggestion of trying things with a simple switch.
