Now that Roon unfolds MQA, is there any reason to choose a 218 over an MS600? Aside from sound quality, are there any differences in functionality?

Thanks in advance,

Rick

Have a read of the data sheets 218 MS600.

At it's current lower price, if you want to use an MS600 with Roon or Sooloos, I think it has the edge on 218; a glimpse of the 800 series.

If you want the full MQA experience and/or make use of the multiple inputs, the 218 is very good. But since Roon started to decode MQA, if I didn't need those extra inputs, I would choose the MS600. The MS600 also has balanced analogue outputs, so it can feed both a preamplifier and a headphone amplifier which is very useful.

Neither will disappoint.

Richard

Personally, for analogue, I don't think that it remotely approaches the 800 series; in fact, I was shocked at the audible difference vs. very top end. YMMV. For digital, where it is simply a conduit for 2x rate digital, it's probably all you need in a 96/24 system, jitter arguments vs. the 218 and MS200 notwithstanding.

It really comes down to functionality. As said above the MS600 is the go to for balanced analog.
For input versitility the 218 wins out.

While at a "Music Matters" seminar in Seattle, Ken Forsyth stated, on a one to ten scale, my MS600 was an "8" while an 818 was an "11". It would be interesting to know the thoughts of people on this forum as well. It would be great to grade CD, MQA, and hi rez separate.

I’ll be using it with Meridian DSP’s, where I assume jitter is one of the main concerns...

Yes, it’s a bummer that the MS600 only has Ethernet input.

I never heard a MS600, but with the 218 digital output to my DSP, I am very satisfied with the sound.

Analogue I have no experience.
