Hi guys,

I am looking for some advice and input on this. I am considering purchasing a pair of DSP3100s from a friend. As I know these are speakers over 10 years old, I wanted to know if there would be any maintenance or service required for a product this old to perform per spec and/or would there be any performance degradation within this time frame? The speakers have relatively low hours on them.

And lastly, if service is required, where can I send them? These will not be under warranty in this case.

Thanks for your input and help! smile

10 years old is fine, I wouldn't worry about that if they've been well looked after. Any premium partner should be able to help with servicing. I had to send one of mine off a couple of years ago for a power issue which turned out to be a regulator which had failed. It wasn't expensive and took a week to turn around. I was v. impressed.

Usual warning with 3100s: they are prone to bricking during firmware updates.

Guys,

Question on setup. I am looking to run the 3100s through a USB to SPDIF converter (Hydra z with power supply) from my computer. Would the 3100s benefit from a preamp such as a 568? I have a 518 ready to test, but I know that the resolution is less than 24/96. I am not sure if there would be any sonic improvements by putting the 518 into the chain.

Thank you for the replies.

Do you already have the Hydra Z?

I have a pair of DSP3100s of unknown vintage, I had the 'backs' off the other day in an effort to diagnose a comms problem. Whilst they were apart there I noticed the 4 power supply smoothing caps had bulging tops, so have replaced them, not a difficult job to do, but something to bear in mind with older electronics.

A couple months ago I bought a pair of 3100’s which were “new old stock”. 14 years old but never used.

Last week I noticed the display on one was flashing erratically, and cycling through menus on its own. I power cycled it and it hasn’t done it again, but it’s a very bad sign...

I haven’t opened them up to look for bulging caps yet, maybe this weekend.

For repairs and checkup in the US, the only option I know is Marc Koval at The Repair Shop in Georgia. He has my G68 now...
