Something didn’t sound right today with MQA material. Checking the settings I discovered that one of the recent Roon updates had changed the way MQA was sent to the 818v3 and it was set as not MQA capable. I was getting 96K PCM indicated on the 818 display with a track normally displayed as MQA 192.

Settings as I found them:

Settings as I changed them:

Everything seems back to normal since I changed the settings back. Just a heads-up to other owners.

For heavens sake, re-enable the MQA decoder! Disabling it is a nuclear option for people who hate MQA.

As long as you are set to "Decoder and Renderer" and run no DSP (including volume levelling), Roon will output bit-perfect MQA which can be decoded and rendered fully by the 818v3 and SEs.

And if you choose to apply some DSP or volume level, you'll get a renderable 88k or 96k hi-res stream with DSP.

When Meridian provides a firmware update, it will actually be rendered.

Wasn’t sure whether that should be toggled on or off.

With it toggled off, I’m getting MQA 192 on the 818 as before; is it supposed to turn MQA support off completely?

Yes, it turns off MQA decoding in Roon period.

Right, but it still passes through MQA content to decoder/renderers like the 818v3?

Yes... provided you don’t do any DSP on it (as has always been the case).

No DSP currently, although I might try this once Meridian update FW to allow subsequent render.

OK so for now I might as well leave it off as the 818 is fully capable, will re-enable when there’s a need.

I would leave the option enabled as you are bound to forget it in the future when Meridian eventually fix the issue laugh and you want to use DSP with MQA files, and setting the 818 to Decoder and renderer by passes it anyway.

My grasp of MQA is that hardware decoding is preferable? So why would switching off the MQA in Roon = going nuclear?

I need to test this with an 818, but as posted before, I thought switching off the MQA decoding in the advanced settings was a tad cleaner with a 218. Hugely subjective, and critical of no-one, but an impression.

I have also preferred up sampling in the Meridian end-points, and may have that bias.
So curious about Roon decoding.

This is how I first noticed it today. Just didn’t sound the same as it had with a recording I’m familiar with. I run the system with the displays off usually, except prior to Roon 1.5 labelling the albums with MQA I used to switch it to sample rate temporarily to check I was actually on the MQA version.

Today I checked out of curiosity when it sounded wrong and noticed that it wasn’t showing MQA but PCM 96. I then checked in Roon settings and found that the 818 wasn’t being used as decoder or renderer. Switching back, it sounds as it should and is a lot more transparent to my ears.

I thought the 1.5 release notes mentioned specifically that with high-end MQA capable hardware you might well be better off letting that do the decode/render?

Impossible to say, but the output of the MQA decoder (first unfold) is identical for all hardware and software solutions. The key performance benefit is the DAC-specific hardware rendering.
