Hi,

I would appreciate thought and opinions on deciding on a source for my system.
I have the 861v4+HD621 connected to power amps and discrete Sonus Faber speakers.

80% of what I view/hear is movies or concerts in 5.1, from a dedicated Kodi machine (PC with Libreelec).
The PC is connected to the HD621 via HDMI only.

Occasionaly I like to hear stereo but lack a CD player so I use Spotify in the KODI machine.

Does the quality of the frontend source really matter, giving that the HD621 is receiving an HDMI signal and all is in digital domain?

Would it be a drastically better sound if say I had a dedicated Bluray Player like an Oppo? This would serve only as a transport so I am guesssing NO.

In the same line of thought, what would be a good choice to use a NEW dedicated transport to say play local DSD files?

I don't have the ID40 in my 861 and I can't add it. So this source would have to connect either to the HDMI input on the HD621, or to a digital input on the 861.

What say you?

I haven't used a disc spinner since the mid 00s - even if there was a smidge to be gained from using a quality transport, the convenience and versatility of streaming from my NAS would massively outweigh it.

Hi,

What version of 861 do you have? If it’s a v4 or higher it it possible to fit an ID40 card.

I’m thinking Roon and your music files on your PC feeding the ID40.

Alternatively, get a Roon Endpoint with SPDIF output connected to the 861.

Regards,
Carl

This +1000. If you’re coming from Spotify on Kodi you’re in for a treat...

YES, the source matters…!

ID40 is one of the the best sources you can add to an 861, failing that a 218 is a superb start!

818v3 of course if you have space and opportunity. smile

If you have an Intel based QNAP you can have that streaming to it with free software from Meridian or get a paid sub from ROON and put the software on what platform(s) you have available.

You are in for a treat if you go further! smile

I have a v4, so installing a ID40 is possible but not very viable.

First, Meridian does not sell ID40 anymore, I would have to find one second hand.
Second, I would have to send my 861 to Meridian along with the ID40 for installing, adding to the cost.
My Meridian dealer is very far away, which translates into aditional costs for shipping plus risk of damage in transit.
So I was thinking of finding an alternative that does not include sending my 861 away from me.

Ideally I want to use my iPad as control, and have my Music stored in my HTPC (it is now running Kodi).
I like to use the iPad with Spotify, it is very user friendly. My KODI machine has Librelec and acts as a server so I can control via iPad and play it on KODI. Very simple.

What is a Roon endpoint? I find it hard to understand the Roon operation mode and gadgets. Examples?

How different is it, from just using the KODI Music player?
The PC/KODI is running as a source/transport and feeding the HD621 through HDMI signal.
So how is quality getting in the way of this? The signal is 100% digital from PC file to HD621...

ID40 cards are available secondhand for approx £400.

You do not need a Meridian dealer to install the card, it is a simple process and the various members of this forum could guide you on the installation, as for configuring it using the Meridian configuration program the same advice applies.

Yes, the install is basically pop in a PCI card in a server if you or a friend have done that before, then it's a piece of cake.

So get the 2nd hand ID40 and enjoy with ROON or Sooloos.

Actually...

Installing an ID40 in a v4 is NOT a simple just plug it in option. The Computer card needs a modification to function and control and accept control from the ID40 card.

From reading his comments about dealer distance and not wanting to ship off for installation I would recommend that he get a 218 for his system.

Hi Mark

I assume you are referring to the mod documented in this thread , do you have the serial number range at which the mod is no longer required?

A 218 would have the added advantage of MQA compatibility...

I am quite confortable in making that mod, i am used to build amplifiers so this looks like a walk in the park.
Is the C000 board removable form the 861 in a easy way? Can i get a guide do dismantle it?

Still... 400 GBP for a simple network card... seems a lot. Plus 120 USD for a Roon membership per year.
I find it hard to justify, when i can use Kodi player today sending the audio through HDMI to my 861.
It would have to be a pretty step upward in sound quality.
Must investigate further...

Thanks for the answers!
