Hi

Seen some of these on eBay and the picture with grill is smilee, the pictures without are not. Is it just the grill that creates this effect and the display is still rectangular?

I think they look like series 3 from pic of rear . Bit expensive so not sure if I would offer anyway but a later edition pair of 5ks might be nice as surrounds.

Comments appreciated.

Kevin

If these are the ones you are looking at....

DSP 5000 smiley on ebay

... then they are Mk3 smiley. The display is different as well as the grill, note the text on the front vs an older style. Also they will be dot matrix rather than 7 segment.

Like Tarik says, but yes, basically it's only the grilles which create the 'smiley' effect, the actual displays underneath are rectangular.

I loved my smileys, but hated the 'smile' effect, so always ran them sans grilles!
