Hi all,

After a SKY HD box drive failure recently which cost me around 4 years of favourite recordings and series link/active recording settings, I have been seriously toying with dumping subscription services in favour of FreeSat, with now TV from the smart TV hub filling in the SKY channel gaps on case by case basis ( ie game of thrones).

I was just keen to sense check what others out there who have cut the cord are doing ref recording however from a PVR perspective. I spotted the Dune 4k HD sky box which looks interesting, are there any other higher end alternatives to consider with onboard satellite receivers which may offer additional functionality, ie discreet channel output on HDMI etc. ?

I dumped Sky in 2011. I’ve owned Freesat since then, with multi-satellite dish for receiving RTL.

Plus, I utilise AppleTV for NowTV (for summer Cricket).

If I’m minded to, I could add TVPlayer for other ‘Sky’ channels.

I recently dumped FreeSat in favour of a FreeView PVR box because the former has lost Ch4 HD.

I use an OSMC Vero4K box for all my 1080p\4K film\TV rips. My only current subscription is Amazon Prime (latest FireTV) but I'm think of adding Netflix

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Not sure your intentions on Now TV but just in case you are not aware, whilst NowTV has a selection of live Sky TV channels, they are exactly that: live only and cannot be viewed/timeshifted at any other time. Whilst things like Game Of Thrones do appear on Now TV as box sets (we spent about 3 months early last year starting from season 1), clearly the box sets are under some alternate schedule as there is rarely any overlap between being in current broadcast window and box set availability - that said, GOT S7 (?) was so we were nearly up there with live broadcasts.

I must say that I really like NowTV. Its just so easy to dip into passes that we often just get a pass say over a holiday period. Plus its got good catch-up services for other channels which was the main reason for getting the box - and at £15 or less for box and 3 months entertainment pass, its excellent value.

PS don't bother with Smart box - we took ours back (due to a tuner issue) and just have a selection of basic boxes.

Is there a good non-Freesat Ch4 HD streaming solution?

What PVR box are you using spinaltap for your freesat recording? Or decoding in the TV?

We don't really watch that much content which is only available on sky channels, I would say 90% of our TV viewing is available on free to air channels, we have prime and Sky Atlantic mainly making up the rest. as such live sky channels on a dip in and out basis via Now TV seems to be the logical way forward. I can access this via the Samsung smart TV hub app which avoids another box.

I'm kinda wondering why I haven't done this before now to be honest, £70 or so quid a month for the convenience of having everything in one sky hub seems like a total waste of money. But do want the ability ideally to get as much as possible form the PVR solution I go with, it's a shame that you can't get everything in one box, ie receivers, recording drive, streaming access/apps etc, the Dune sky box looked the closest to this.

To complicate matters a little, I also run a windows HTPC with Kodi for local media/rips/selected streaming (and connected NAS drive) which also hosts LMS feeding my squeezeboxes, and had thought about that route as a possible one box solution into live TV access/recording. There seems to be a plethora of software available. SWMBO not happy about the removal of a nice simple central hub for TV, and my lack of technical prowess put the blockers on this route forward. Happy to be corrected if others have followed this route and it is a straight forward process?

I presume you are running Kodi on this Cliff? What does it give you that a dedicated PC set up doesn't out of interest? Also you mention TV rips, are you referring to TV disc rips or does this box offer a route into TV show recording also?

Nice looking box btw.

Hi Lee,

Yes, Kodi on the Vero4k – it’s designed to run Kodi and as far as possible is plug and play. Although, setting up smb shares is always fun and if you want to stream 4K rips, a bit of tweaking of the share protocol is required to get smooth playback. What is does well is stream 4K (up to 30fps) and pass the HDR10 metadata onto the display. Review here .

It does come with a TV\PVR frontend but I’ve not tried it

Anyone have any experience with Enigma2 receivers/set top boxes?

So looks like I am going to press the button on a Gigabue UHD Quad 4k receiver following a bunch of research into the latest spec receivers. It's Linux Enigma2 powered so certainly a learning curve ahead as not plug and play. However, these machines look seriously flexible and the features are impressive so looking forward to the challenge.

I'll report back on my findings once it's up and running.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
