Gibson Guitars has filed for bankruptcy. This will also affect its subsidiary Onkyo and Teac brands.

In my youth I hankered for a Gibson Ripper Bass.

Just for balance

Chief executive Henry Juszkiewicz, who bought the company in 1986, said the Chapter 11 filing would assure the company's "long-term stability and financial health".

It aims to exit bankruptcy protection on 24th September.

It's a sorry story of mis-management and poor treatment of both customers and dealers, plus not having a clue what the customer actually wants.

As I posted here or elsewhere, last year I was considering the possibility of getting a Les Paul Standard, but was completely put off by both the proliferation of models on the website (which I couldn't figure out) and the way that they'd turned something very special into a commodity. 2017 Les Paul model? No thanks; I want a Les Paul, not something with per-year branding...

No doubt it will be slimmed down to concentrate on the core offering again and/or be bought.
