This has been my experience also, for as many years as I care to remember.

3dit0r,

Could you please let us know what you have done. What works and what doesn't?

Thanks S

Goodness; you're talking 25 years of constant trial and experimentation!

Basically, in my experience, everything makes a difference, hence identifying with what Bob said.

The components, mains wiring (not just power cables, the way the mains is actually wired), power filtering, system cabling, what you stand the components and speaker on, the room itself, how it's furnished and any room treatments, even curing rattling windows and floorboards...

I've experimented with it all, and it all makes a difference. The magnitude of the difference and whether some of those are worth attending to in your own system vs money, practical and domestic constraints, is up to each individual.

In terms of what works, I could only tell you what works for me, and you'll get a very small idea if you look at my sig, but there are things on there you won't see like the installation of a dedicated ring main/fuse box for the hi-fi, etc...

Let me know if there's a particular aspect you want me to outline, and I'll be more specific.

Cheers.

I too have a dedicated ring/fuse box for the hifi and a dedicated room with room treatment. I haven't tried different cables though regarding MC200 MS600 or speakers etc

Cheers

Oh, on the current system, that’s a little easier to narrow down.

Well, look at some decent mains cables, but try to get them on loan/trial and see if they make a difference for you. Definitely look into mains filtration. I have found Russ Andrews mains filters work, have no audible downside and are reasonably priced compared to the competition.

I’ve found wooden supports to sound most natural and pleasing.

Cables-wise, are you running DSPs? If so, the runs of SpeakerLink from your MS600 to your speakers might be worth a look. That’s not network information running on those, it’s SPDIF over EBU balanced audio cable. There are several options now available. I like the sound of Meridian’s own cable, but currently experimenting with the same Cat7/6a cables I’ve been using on the network runs from Universal Networks with good results. About to try this.

I’m interested in trying this (with a couple of low noise PSUs) and/or this. I would think these would make more difference in your setup due to ID40 instead of ID41.

Lots to experiment with!

Yes I have DSP 6000 L & R and 5500 HC

Lots to take in thanks. The cables sound fascinating.

I have an old mains conditioner, a Isotek sub.

Cheers

Hi Shaun,

Very nice speaker setup, still miss my 6Ks, awesome!

In that case, you could experiment with different digital coaxial cables on the runs to the DSPs. Chris, who used to be at Meridian Repair Shop, but now runs Meridian Legacy (ex Meridian engineer) has, I believe, the last stock of the original Meridian M/S cable, which he makes up with the original Neutrik connectors. Used them in a friend's system and I must say they sound bloody good. Since they were likely the cable Meridian used to 'tune' the speakers, you might well call them definitive for legacy gear (?).

Alternatively, you could try Belden 1694A with Canare connectors. Blue Jeans do these.

If you get excited by these improvements and want to go higher up than these, Kimber are very good. Their D60 and above are, I believe, based on Chris Sommovigo designs (they bought the patents, iirc) and you could order these with the WBT Nextgen RCA plugs, which are very high bandwidth and about the closest you'll get to a 75ohm connector in an RCA.

Kimber D60

Have fun!

James
