Hi All,

A somewhat long writeup. The questions are in there, but wanted to detail my experience, should it prove useful for someone thinking about going this way.

I just tried Roon. I am very impressed by the community but have am questioning how useful it really is...

My setup, ROCK i7 NUC going to Raspberry PI 3 with Allo Digione and Ropieee to Legacy DSP5200s
(I found the Roon KB instructions on setting it all up to be extremely easy and clear.)
I was disappointed to discover that my 32 bit iPad could not run Roon remote.

I have been using the PI for a few months with Spotify, using different Linux distros. I really liked Volumio with the IFI PSU.
Spotify connect was great for building playlists and finding music.
However, the 320 kbs quality was lacking.

So enter Roon and Tidal. Sounds really good. I did like the write-ups on the musicians but have questions.

I wanted this setup for when Roon can do the 1st unfold of MQA. I know that’s all I can get... until I upgrade to SE's, but wouldn't a 218 endpoint and the Tidal app do the same thing?

I am interested in DSP room correction. And will eventually get a mic and REW for measurements, but will it work with Meridian DSP's?

And what if I eventually change the PI to the 218 streamer which I assume will apodize allowing the DSP5200 to accept the upsampled, MHR MQA?

I guess Roon might be worth if I was to digitize all my CD's, which was my intention. But now I am wondering why bother, If the streaming services are serving up CD or better quality?

I was disappointed to see that you can't link different types of devices for whole house music.

Using the Roon app for Tidal searching has issues. For example John Coltane's "A Love Supreme" didn't come up on his Roon page, and was buried among other similar titles. I had to download the Tidal app to see that was available. This happened with other tracks.

Also If you click play on one track in an album listing all the tracks end up in the queue.

I guess my final question is, is Roon really that good for finding new music discoveries? Is the focus function really the useful... I have yet to figure out how it works...

Thanks for any comments.
Ian

There can be some confusion around whole house Audio in Roon, if the endpoint runs the Roon RAAT protocol then it can be linked to other zones that run RAAT as well, here is a list of currently compatible endpoints.

Sorry but this is incorrect, if you want to play one track you can either search for the track or album then click on the track where you have the option to play now, add next or add to the queue further these options are customisable in the Settings, Play Actions menu.

I suspect the issue was that you were running different versions of the Roon app, were you using an iPhone or iPad that had not been updated to iOS 11 as this will restrict you to Roon 1.3 whereas your core device was almost certainly running Roon 1.4.

Hi Russ

I don't think it is incorrect. If I click play (black triangle) on an album track, it does add the other tracks of the album in the queue - The message "playing x tracks is also displayed".

That's not to say it can't be worked around as you have described.

Cheers
Tom

Hi Tom,

If there is mismatch between Roon Core and Roon Remote it can exhibit that behaviour.

What device are you using to run the Roon Remote and what is the OS version?

On that device can you go to Roon -> Settings -> About ... and report back what version of:

- Roon Core is running?
- Roon Remote is running?

Regards
Carl

I don't think it's to do with a core/remote mismatch. Much more likely that "Settings/Play Actions" hasn't been configured - and those settings are per remote, not global. By default they add all tracks from the Album Details view, for example.

Comment! Roon is clearly more advanced in many respects, but I still love the simplicity of Sooloos.

If you want to play just one track from a album in Roon, don't just click on the "arrow" to the left of the track. You need to click on the track itself and then you will be offered the option of "Play From Here" "Play Now" "Add Next" "Queue" or "Start Radio"

Still-one,
Agreed - but that wasn't the way the OP described his experience. (Ludwig is correct, and the default option for clicking on the arrow can be configured to default as "Play Now" which is probably a better lomg term solution if this is how you want it to work)

Cheers
Tom

Hi Carl,

Both core and remote are running 1.4 (build 310) latest version.

Cheers

Again, this is only true if you have (left it) configured like that.

It can be configured too that "just clicking on the arrow to the left of the track" is exactly how you should play just one track.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for confirming, that rules out a problem I’ve seen with other user.

The advice from Ludwig, is sound. Can you go to Roon -> Settings -> Play Actions.

With this screen it is possible to configure what actions (on 5 different screen) are available and which one is the default (triggered using the left hand action button). You do the later by clicking in the the 3 bars, and dragging it up to the top of the list.

I have mine set to ‘add to queue’ .

Have a play ... let us know how you get on.

Regards,
Carl
