Today I happened to open Control:Mac and a pop-up menu indicated that is was running a 32bit app and that these will no longer be supported by MacOS in the near future. Apparently we will be seeing this warning on all older apps going forward.

Today another company pushed out their 64 bit version in response to the forthcoming changes in what Apple will support.

All of the Meridian Sooloos products are getting long in tooth and I wonder what will if anything we are going to see going forward. I might have to switch to Roon 100% even for my whole house system.

Does anyone have information that I may have missed?

The official answer is ... there is no answer as M do not talk about future products or roadmaps (or much else really).

Anyone with predominantly Mac-based household running Sooloos is going to need either an update or alternative very soon when 32-bit support ceases.

My own Sooloos system experience has been pi$$ poor for the last few years which has driven me more towards Roon/JRiver/Vox/Plex/Kodi and I still keep my Mch discs to hand. Fed up with endpoints falling off the network even with different routers and next to no updates or development of the very basic-looking Sooloos interface. Also had to give up my vMsr because of the constant testing. Currently just keep it in reserve with a static IP for when absolutely nothing else works.

To check on a Mac for other potential 32-bit apps go to Apple Menu>About This Mac>System Report>Software (Applications) and on the far right it says 64-bit and if you scan down the list anything marked 'No' is 32-bit. May be worth checking some developers websites for updates.

Best

Maybe our wonderful mods could get an answer from M on this potential problem?

We can ask, but don’t hold your breath waiting for an answer frown

I suggest Control:Mac users lobby their deals.

I really hope they update this program since I use my computer to rip the music to Sooloos. My Sooloos have always worked perfectly in respond to previous comment.

Meridian needs to update the program.

This concerns a program modification to enable it to continue working quite why Meridian don’t communicate their intentions is a mystery and very poor.

Sooloos (at least did) uses Mono Framework which allows .Net (predominately Windows) applications (such as some Sooloos apps) run on other platforms such as OSX.

Unfortunately, there is a 64 bit limitation in Mono.

Quote:
32 and 64 bit support

The Mono packages published on this web site provide both a 32-bit and a 64-bit Mono VM.

Starting from Mono 5.2 the mono command defaults to 64-bit, you can use the --arch=32/64 switch to control the bitness.

The 64 bit support has a few limitations today:

Our Windows.Forms implementation uses Carbon, and as such, it would not work with a 64-bit Mono.
If Control:Mac was a Windows Forms application (quite possibly) then this limitation may be a significant issue. The latest "open" version of .Net (.Net Core), designed from ground up to be cross platform but currently a subset of the classic Windows .Net Framework, is cloud centric and does not support Windows Forms type applications either. So no future path either.

There is always Control:Web for OSX users as a very basic fall back, and alternatives such as iOS/iPad, but that obviously leaves some important omissions not covered by Control:Web and will not cover 100% of user base. If I was a betting man, I wouldn't even consider placing a bet on Meridian filling in these omissions, even if, as I would suspect, the odds were very long.

Unfortunately, the Apple way of doing things is annually moving on and dropping support for old. I've got several ££££ worth of software that will not run on Apples 'latest and greatest' and upgrading the software to allow it to run would cost ££££ in its own right. At some point with Apple, you have to make the decision to stay on the rollercoaster ride, or get off. Sometimes it is painful to just get off, but is the least expensive in the long run if you can still remain happy with versions that a few years before you would have been delighted by.

Should you be correct Ian then no longer having Control:Mac available for the latest Mac OS would be a mistake imho forcing Mac users into having to run Windows via Parallels, VMWare or Bootcamp is hardly the way forward, or maybe there is a bigger picture?

as Jeje said a couple of days ago, the release of Roon 1.5 is a great opportunity for HH'ers with legacy DSP speakers to (re?) evaluate the Roon Labs product.

I grew tired of waiting and broke down and bought a cheap PC to use for Meridian only. Will use it for M Config and Sooloos via Control:PC.
