Hello,

I'm trying to work out the best way to use the room correction software. I connected over the weekend having connected a Rode microphone (for a DJI Osmo) to my MacBook thinking it would record through there but then discovered you need to use the A8 mic socket on the back of the G68XXV.

Presumably I can connect a phono lead (I have a long one) to it, then have a phono to mini jack and connect the same Rode mic into it? Would that be sufficient or should I do something different? Is there a specific lead / mic you can buy to do the room correction?

I do have an Onkyo amp stuffed under the bed in a box, so was considering digging that out and seeing whether it has a mic in the box and seeing if that mic would work.

Thanks
Nick

Meridian have previously suggested an RS (Radio Shack) SPL meter - this has phono out and the mic does not need to be anything special as it is simply used to measure time based impulse response. So it just plugs in via long phono lead into G68.

You may already have one as an SPL meter is needed for other calibration.

You can probably do what you suggest with your existing Mic, but you still will need an SPL as part of the standard calibration steps so an RS SPL meter (or another with mic output) will be a dual purpose device. Still plenty of RS SPL meters available from various sources.

I don't have an SPL meter, struggling to find anyone that sells one here in Hong Kong. Will keep looking

RS as in Radio Shack?

Can you plug the SPL meter into the amp and use that?

Could I do what I suggested, with the Rode mic?

Thanks

Nick

Any recommendations for one to buy from Amazon?

You could try it a different way if you're PC savy.

Buy a MiniDSp UMIK-1 calibrated mic. (They are Meridian Dealers and have a presence on this forum) and then install REW.

Then just follow the instructions in the Wiki REW Tuning.

Doing it this way will give you a visual overview of what is happening in your room sound wise and also show up any problems with the sound. Arguably, it's also a more accurate way of setting up the DSP.

Sounds good & like the type of mic I'm after, I'll have a look and read up about it.

Have you used this? Presumably it makes a big difference once you've set up your system properly? Are the mics quite fragile?

Thanks,

Nick

I've answered some of your questions in my earlier post.

Clearly you are really looking for an advanced idiots guide wink

Just remember that Meridian themselves will have used the RS meters when assessing their products and so will many users on this forum so there is lots of track record and lots of help if you want to keep things simple. MRC does not need an accurate mic and calibration tones are mixed frequency and effectively just balancing deltas between channels which helps mitigate single frequency inaccuracies.

Des from Meridian gave a 2.5 hour talk on MRC at Meridian West London a couple of years ago.

Luckily it was recorded for posterity and posted on YouTube. I think it would be well worth your time watching it.

eBay have quite a few for sale, mainly US based so shipping may be costly.

Thanks for the comments! Ian, just wasn't sure what the RS SPL meter was, hard to find when you google it and couldn't (or haven't managed to yet) find any links to it. Looking in the wiki shows some more expensive models but says it's not worth spending the money on them! Just don't want to buy something, pay for the shipping & find it doesn't do the job! Will look on eBay / Amazon again.

I've started to watch the video & was hoping it would show more about what you need & how to do it. It doesn't actually show any of the hardware needed or what you should get.

I had a quick look at the MiniDSP one looks cool, but maybe OTT for the job?

Thanks, sorry for the questions!

Nick

I accept that a Meridian system can be set up perfectly well using an SPL meter, however the Umik mic is only £100, a bit less than the cheapest SPL meter that RS sells, and the instructions on the wiki for using REW are pretty straightforward.

Where a mic + REW wins out over an SPL is that almost all rooms suffer frequency response issues and REW will show up what the issues are and where they are on the spectrum. With REW you can experiment with different speaker positions, and a lot more. The UMIK mic is USB, it just plugs straight into a computer. The MRC won't give you an in room frequency response graph, but I accept that many people aren't bothered with such stuff.

As I say, it depends what one actually wants to do and how technically minded one is. Flexibility of a mic + REW and experimenting to get the smoothest frequency response or trust the MRC, set and forget. But the instructions on the wiki are pretty straightforward, and while the SPL meter will probably end up gathering dust in a drawer, a mic + REW can come in handy for a lot of things. (yes, I know certain SPL meters can be used with REW, but if it were me I'd still go with a mic).

Whatever you choose, do you have a choice so it's always worth thinking about a mic + REW vs an SPL meter.

Radio Shack / Tandy SPL meter, should be UK£25-30ish. A search for SPL meters on your local Amazon should find you something that looks very similar to the RS one in the photo_ it’ll do the same job.

It does, look at the Measurements tab, right-click, View Plot. Choose Low Frequency Response.

I will concede that REW is much easier to read and can provide the relevant filters required but you can achieve decent results using MRC's built in calibration. I don't find MRC's auto filters that useful, personally, but you can tinker with them and adjust that Low Frequency Response graph in realtime.
