I need a better quality player for streaming Roon/Tidal than my current RPi + SPDIF board. Thinking about a 218. Obviously don’t need it’s DAC, but the MQA decoder would be nice. Will that be moot once Roon unfolds MQA, or would it still be better to do that in the 218?

Then there’s the matter of the analog sub I just bought.

Not sure how I’d connect everything to the 218/G68. SpeakerLink to SPDIF converter for the DSP3100’s doesn’t seem difficult, but how to get the benefits of the bass management of the G68 and the MQA of the 218?

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Hi Rick,

I have a 218 in my G68 system and it works great. Integration is seamless. I used to have to swap
It’s input to Ethernet using the Meridian phone app for streaming but now it switches automatically whenever I feed it Roon.

I have it between the G68 and analogue main L&R
Centre & rear speakers are digital.

Not sure how you will go feeding the 3100’s? I might be mistaken but I don’t think you will get the full MQA unfold out of them, (even with the 218).

I am hoping to get first unfold out of my 568/3100 system once Roon provides it.

I have a few REL subwoofers. Once the 2nd Q100 is fixed I will feed a stereo pair off my mono amps.

Currently just the one on the G68 system for HT duties.

Cheers,
Andrew

See you’ve already found the other 218 discussion. I was going to suggest the Allo DigiOne as a here and now cheap upgrade while you wait for Roon MQA. Or as I suggested there, Bluesound Node 2 if you want MQA now - at least the first unfold. It’s Roon endpoint ready.

Struttmaster,

I see, you're going to connect the subs to your analogue fronts. I have 3100's so that won't work for me...

Do you have a sub connected to the 218? If so how? This is my main concern about the 218. I guess I could connect the sub to the G68 but then there's no MQA for the sub.

Yep, just ordered an Allo, but would still like something higher quality.

Blusound Node 2 is an option, though in a review it got clobbered by the Arcam rPlay, but it doesn't have MQA. Sigh... Nothing is simple, eh?

Agreed, the 3100's don't know anything about MQA, or accept anything above 96KHz, so I won't get the full effect. I'd need a Speakerlink to SPDIF adapter to get teh signal from the 218 to the 3100's. I'm assuming that's not a big problem...

Rick

Hi Rick,

No sub out on the 218.

I have 568/3100 combo with a sub. Sounds great with the Allo. Looking forward to hearing how it goes with the first MQA unfold by Roon once it is available.

Cheers,
Andrew

Rick,

I don't want to be too controversial but _ given all of the inherent compromises that you have with MQA playback in your system as is, I wonder if you're going a bit OTT.

I'd be tempted just to feed either the digital aux output or the analogue output from the 218 directly into your G68. From the 218 manual, you should be able to get apodising and upscaling from the 218 digital outputs* (SL via Reviver or adapter or coax output) directly into your G68 processor. Going via the G68 will allow you to use your analogue sub and won't require additional adapters (Reviver or adapter) to connect your DSP speakers.

As a 'stop-gap', you could simply use a MS200 as a Roon end point to feed the G68.

Prior to the availability of the 218, some people have reported good results from feeding the analogue MQA output from an Explorer2 into their processors.

I noticed on another discussion that you were considering SE speakers _ if that's the case you could argue that with a 218, you wouldn't need your G68 (if you're only running stereo).

Just some thoughts,

Brian

(*I'm not sure if the coax output carries MQA)

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the advice.

Yes I was looking at some SE’s but it turned out to be a scam. Fortunately I caught on before sending any money. Quite an elaborate scam though. Almost got me.

I read in another post that when the 218 was before the G68 that SE speakers didn’t report MQA. Now maybe the signal was still MQA, but the G68 just “lost” the authentication?

MS200 is an interesting possibility. I’ll look into it. Probably sounds better than the Allo...

Sure, my current system has limited ability to do justice to MQA but trying to get the most out of it is half the fun right? smile

Frankly my biggest issue right now is that the 3100’s still sound a bit clinical and harsh. I’m pretty sure they’re not fully broken in yet so I’m hoping that will resolve itself within a few weeks.

Cheers,

Rick

Rick,

Since the MS200 has just been discontinued, you might be able to pick up a cheap one or a second hand one. When/if a cheaper(?) ‘better option’ for the 218 comes along, you can always use the MS200 in another zone.

Brian.

Rick,

The G68 will not pass MQA, period. If you want MQA with a 218 and G68 you put the 218 right before the DSP speakers in the chain.
