Official announcement on their website

And an independent journal also reporting

Seems like there is little money in A/V and hardware-based sources...

Wonderful perfect quadraphonic sound with distortion levels so low as to make a brave man weep smile

Hi Gianni

I was just about to post a link to this disturbing news...bit of a shock. They have felt like a such a solid and reliable part of the AV establshment for the past decade or more, quite sad to hear they are winding down.

I guess streaming is taking over, as long as your broadband is fast enough?

Sad, but I have to say, not surprising. The premium disc player market has to be a rapidly declining one.

I have to confess, I have a growing collection of 4k discs and don't own a 4k capable player.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Oppo tell us that latest models, UDP-203 and UDP-205 will continue to be available until at least 2019, so I'm not expecting a firesale.

Mmmm!
Not an unexpected dealer response considering that the Oppo product is well respected in the market. Just not production volume viable in the future v streaming alternatives.

Probably as hard for dealers as it is for the rest of us. U.S. site www.avsforum.com contacted Oppo directly on the West Coast and amongst other things were told the following :

"Q: Why is Oppo terminating its product manufacturing?

A: The revenue from sales cannot offset the cost of developing players and maintaining a production facility.

Q: The announcement says Oppo will “gradually” stop making products. How gradually?

A: We are in the process of manufacturing our last batch of products. If there is no change to delay or speed up the production, we expect the last product to come out of the factory in June.

Q: When production stops, will you continue to sell products in your inventory? How long do you anticipate that might last?

A: Yes, we will continue to sell products in our inventory. It is hard to predict how long that might last; based on the previous rate, it may last 2-3 months. However, demand may slow down given the announcement, or perhaps people will want to get products while they can and the inventory will be sold out quickly.

Q: What will happen to the company in the long term? Will it change its focus in some way, or will it stay open long enough to support its products for some period of time? Are we talking months or years?

A: The company will transition from product development to product support. We are committed to supporting the products for as long as we can. For those who just purchased one of our products or will purchase them, we will honor the 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, so we are talking about years rather than months. This is also why we made the announcement now, so customers can make an informed decision regarding future purchases, and we can plan to have the proper resources to support the customers and products. "

This is a bleak day indeed. Oppo are one of the, sadly, very few companies whose products and customer service and interaction with owners before and after purchase has been the Gold Standard since their inception.

I've had the 83/93/103 and now 203 and never had to wait more than a day for a reply to any query ever. That, and regular user-updatable firmware updates distinguish them from the multitude.

Roon lifetime is about as cheap as a 203 I think. Tidal is the cost of a CD and a half a month if you can find it in a store.

I think a lot of people use their Oppos for video replay. Sadly, the SQ of most streamed movie soundtracks is poor compared to the DTS-HD\Atmos available on Blu-ray discs.

I'm still a hunter-gatherer ;O) I prefer to own and then stream/rip and enjoy on my own terms .Its funny to me that we would spend 100 Roon lifetimes on a pair of loudspeakers and then pause for thought at the price of a CD . Kodi and Plex are fine too for what they are as is Tidal for dipping a toe in some new waters . Best Buy in the U.S. will cease CD sales altogether in July 2018 . I think the push towards Streaming only , unfortunately , is mostly governed by greed as companies seek to increase profits by decreasing production costs . I still buy the superdeluxeedition of my favourite albums , eg. Pineapple Thief's live tour-de-force 'Where We Stood' and Steven Wilson's footstomping ode to Pop culture of his youth ' To The Bone ' .

At least if my health or wealth fail me , in my house , the music will never stop :O)

Each to their own , Enjoy the Music !

Everyone thinks that the silver disc is dead, however in 2017, silver disc sales exceeded sales of digital downloads and are orders of magnitude greater than vinyl. It looks like digital downloads may be in bigger trouble - too much of a pain in the a$$ unless, 1) you are computer-literate and patient as Job, 2) you have great IP service with bandwidth.

ALL brick and mortar sales of most anything are down due to one organization - Amazon. On Amazon is is possible to purchase nearly every CD, SACD, DVD-V, DVD-A, Blu-Ray disc and 4K Blu-Ray disc EVER MADE for a substantial discount. Indeed EMI, Decca, DG and many other classical labels have been making 50+ count box sets available on Amazon for less than $0.50 PER DISC. It is an even bigger bargain than used vinyl sales, since Amazon offers new or used silver discs, and used CD's, for the most part, are indistinguishable from new, while a LOT of used vinyl I have purchased sounds like my cat had her way with it first. I think the death of the silver disc is as much as a myth as the death of vinyl.

In addition, Sony and Samsung are still making pretty good universal players. Not Oppo quality, but pretty good. I also think one of the high end brands will re-enter this market space with Oppo out of the competition.

I do think streaming will indeed take over and likely become the new FM. With no competition from other media, even with a subscription, it will become increasing expensive and littered with commercials. Need an analogy ? DirecTV and Sky Net. You pay for access AND have to put up with commercials. Believe me its coming for audio streaming as well. Don't give up your physical media without a fight.

The most obvious candidate to pick up where Oppo leaves off is Cambridge Audio. I believe they share the same architecture, chassis and production facilities.

Given the size of Oppo vs Cambridge Audio, how, would it be more viable for the latter ?

The longer I think of it the more cowardly Oppo's decision seems. A likely product of the 'anything-can-go except executive pay' management style. Most companies would kill for Oppo's players' reputation but instead of perhaps a minor price increase to keep going or a newer, lower price-point model , somehow, chucking in the towel seems an overreaction.

Don't be surprised if Panasonic make up some of the ground too. They always were more expensive than Oppo and their newer ModelEB-820 plays everything except DVD-A.

Cambridge Audio simply sourced similar parts to Oppo, that doesn't mean that the player will be as good (though I have no personal experience of it either way).

I can’t help thinking that development costs to get the 203 firmware working 'correctly' for combinations of TV/Projector/SDR/HDR etc. have been a whole lot worse than previous generations of machine. Just have a look at the firmware history on the first page of the avforums owners thread.

4K has been challenging to get right and Im not sure its actually 100% there even now. Not helped by the evolving technology of SDR, HDR and then Dolby DV, oh and broadcast HDR (can't remember what that’s called). I would say money grab but lets be kind.

The machine was released way too early but to their credit, they stuck with it.

I could live without the universal playback, if that helped. But I will stick with disc because it’s the best way to hear a film. I just dont want to go back to compressed soundtracks. I had the 93, skipped the 103 and now have the 203.

Players I’ve owned seem to last around 5 years so hopefully someone else will step up to the plate when my 203 stops working. Hey Ho.

But I’m not looking forward to 8K when they start pushing that to consumers!

Cheers
Greg

Good luck trying to get your hands on a 205, prices have gone through the roof, Oppo was, and still is, still the best choice as a DVD and preamp to active speaker set up.

I will have to find one to make sure that if the current 105D fails I have backup.

Just picked up on this story now & I was very surprised to read it.

As the owner of ~ 1,300 unripped blu rays & DVDs I'm quite tempted to buy a 203 before they disappear. Also, I'd like to add fuel to the 'the silver disc isn't dead' argument; Bluray sales are close to record highs & even if they dwindle over the coming years there will always be people who like to own things. I can see both arguments but the (relatively) healthy vinyl sales, decades after 'better' formats came along, suggests that blu rays & DVDs could yet see decades of production.

I buy blu rays & also subscribe to Sky Movies out here in Italy; the BDs always perform faultlessly, the Sky offering often has picture breakup & other annoyances that I could do without.

As an aside to this story, we recently spent a few weeks in SE Asia & the number of selfies taken by the locals is off the scale. Some younger girls, in particular, can spend half an hour in one spot taking them. No, I'm not exaggerating.

There were Oppo logos everywhere & at first I wondered if I'd be able to pick up a 203 for pennies but my investigations quickly showed me that the Oppo retailers were selling smart phones. The weapon of choice appeared to be the Oppo F5 so I googled it & it turned out to have a class-leading selfie camera; everything slotted into place!

Perhaps Oppo are making so much money from selling F5 phones that they have lost interest in Bluray players!

Oppo are number 4 in the world for smartphones, which given I've never seen one in the flesh means they are selling a shedload in Asia.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

I'm currently in south east Asia and the Oppo disc spinners are only marginally cheaper than at home
(Vietnam). I used a hotel laptop to check the prices and was hoping to squeeze one home in my luggage
But saw little point.

Oppo on their North American web site are seeking interest by registering your email for a Oppo 205, they are out of inventory at present, if enough interest is shown a last production run expected in June 2018.

Whilst it states the unit is for the North American market, units are readily able to be configured for world wide use.

Presumably the cost will still be US1,299

Gerard.
