Hello,
After reading this forum for a while and always finding great insights into the world of Meridian, I figured this would be the best place to ask this question.

I've recently purchased a Meridian 568.2MM along with a 598 DVD transport. I also have a 596 in my system. All 3 of them are daisychained with their own coms cable. I have configured the sources within the 568.2 which also acts as the system controller, however, I've run into the problem that when I select a DVD source, both of which are configured to 4C and each have their own product address, both DVD players turn on. Is it possible to configure them to have independant power-on stages, so one is only powered when its input is selected, and otherwise off?`

I havent been able to locate this in either of their manuals, but I saw it mentioned in the DSP5500s manual, which hinted this might be feasible.

I believe that with all Meridian gear linked by comms, all will be turned on and off at the same time.

Thanks, Edd

Thanks for the fast response, Bee.

Of course my setup is a bit nonsensical, since there is two DVD players present and both used in single setup. They are both installed because one has had a new DVD-drive installed and the other is running with its original drive from the factory, so it would be just be great if they could play nice with each other while both plugged in. This way I can put the more heavy use on the newer drive. That being said, the communications via the MSR works flawlessly, it's just the power-stage that seemed odd.

Unplug the comms from the 596 - whilst the 598 is a better machine, I assume that the reason why you are keeping both is that its nice to not to have to keep swapping discs every time you switch between CD and DVD, which I fully understand but was negated when I started streaming music.

It would be possible to change the product address to avoid a clash with 2 DVD machines (its been a while since I've done this and other will be better versed) but even so, I don't think this will prevent the issue that its all machines powered or none when connected via comms, which is not what you are wanting.

If you did reassign comms address (recommend to do in 596) instead of unplugging comms, it would not resolve the power issue, but at least you would still have transport controls via Meridian comms, which may be less of an annoyance than having one or other powered down.

Of course, there are always the switches on the back too!

There is no way around this, all equipment will turn on regardless of whether it is the source being used; the only device I know of that works differently is a 518, it will go back into standby if a source isn't configured on it.

To be honest, if both players are turned on at the rear and in standby, they are for all purposes 'on', there will be no real change in power consumption between fully on and in standby.

All the best,

Steve

Thank you for the quick and thorough responses. I'll just have to get used to it being on, though unplugging the COM does sound like the best solution.

IIRC 500 series drives will spin continuously when the unit is 'on', even with no disc loaded, and you can hear it when sitting close-ish.

Cheers,
Jason.

Interesting, I have only witnessed this when the DVD-drive's firmware did not exactly match the unit.

My 598 still has its original factory DVD-drive and is dead quiet in standby, but the 596 has a replaced DVD-drive and has a clear spinning sound while in standby.
