Hi all,

I received my UHD722 yesterday as a replacement for my HD621. On setting it up 2 of my 4 sources now cause noise to be heard when using Dolby Digital, PCM is fine. I wondered if anyone else has similar experiences or has found a solution?

Setup: [Oppo 203, PS4, Sky TV, Amazon Fire TV] -> 722 MMHR -> G65 -> DSPs

Oppo 203 and PS4 can output PCM, DD Bitstream or DTS bitstream and the G65 locks on appropriately
Amazon Fire TV, Sky TV can output 2 channel PCM ok and the G65 shows MHR Movie 2 and normal sound is heard, however when the source is changed to DD bitstream the G65 still shows MHR Movie 2 and I assume plays the bitstream as though it were PCM, hence the noise

All the sources worked fine with the HD621. I have changed all cables to and from the 722 with the same result, have also tried using smartlink rather than MMHR but no difference.

It also seems to take an age to handshake compared to the HD621.

I assume someone else out there is using a Sky box or Fire TV successfully with the 722?

The picture however is fantastic!

Thanks everyone,
Tim

Interesting about the handshaking times vs HD621. Would it not be faster with the *much* newer UHD722?

Has Meridian talked/mentioned this? Could it be fixable via updated firmware?

Are you using HDR capable HDMI cables.

When the Oppo 203 came out, a number of people were using it with their existing cabling which caused a lot of handshaking problems.

I keep a spare to swap in and out, as a sanity check if anything looks even the slightest bit weird.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the cabling is fine and I've swapped around the cables among what I have but I agree it doesn't hurt to try another set. Perhaps the handshaking delay is something cable related. The main issue though is the G65 not locking onto Dolby Digital anymore for just 2 of the 4 sources. 4k video is fine, it's the relatively low bandwidth audio that is the problem and I can't see how that is cable related, especially as the Fire TV doesn't have a cable, just a dongle.

Ironically given your post - the Oppo 203 is the bit that works the best!

Latest update on my issues with Dolby Digital through the UHD722 being heard as noise from some sources...

Sky HD+ successfully replaced with Sky Q. DD works just fine now, as does UHD and handshaking.
Amazon Fire TV replaced by Apple 4k. Again no DD issues, 4k works just fine and ATV supports Amazon Prime Video plus Netflix.

So in short - the UHD722 will fail to recognise Dolby Digital from some sources and will transmit noise. That is a problem that Meridian need to fix. However, choose the sources wisely and you might just get it working well. I am happy with how things are working now, although it is disconcerting that any future source will be a gamble as to whether it works or not.

Just as an update to this. I've just plumbed in my new UHD722 today and am having no joy with DD on Amazon Fire TV, just noise. I'm using the standard 1080p Fire TV.

Hi Neill,

This is a well know problem from several of us. There appears to be a problem with the UHD722 negotiating with the Amazon Fire TV to software decode DD+ (EAC-3) to PCM. This was not a problem on the HD621.

You can work around this problem by disabling Dolby Digital Plus in the audio setup menu on the Fire TV. When you disable DD+ you will only get Dolby Digital 2.0 on all sources.

Please report this issue to your dealer so we can get Meridian to correct this problem soon.

Thanks,
Jim

It's good to see that Meridian has released a firmware update but you'd have hoped the UHD722 would have hit the ground running, not stumbling...

As the board in the UHD722 is shared by a number of manufacturers, I am sure it was not just a Meridian problem. Keeping up with every 99 dollar HDMI widget is probably a lot of work.

Well, maybe, but it seems to have had more than its fair share of issues.

Let's hope M can keep it performing for their early purchasers.

I got the firmware updated today and my Fire TV 5.1 issue is solved! I also had a PCM audio issue where audio went silent with TiVo Bolt+ and it is resolved too.

Great to hear the new UHD722 firmware is resolving many of the issues folks had - I'll try this weekend but it sounds like the Fire TV DD issue is fixed.

I think it's pretty good service from Meridian actually - less than 3 months from reported incidents to new firmware being released. My dealer Stuart at The Integrated Home was very supportive too.

Now the great irony of course is if any of you were waiting for a fix before you took the plunge you now have less than 24 hours before the upgrade deal ends!
Perhaps M should extend the offer time on that basis.

Hi, asked my dealer and he couldn't see the UHD722 firmware on the regular weblogin. He even sent me a screenshot only showing the HD621 firmware at the audio processor section download.

Do you need to request this firmware specifically from Meridian and what version string are we talking about here?

He needs to login with a dealer account then it is accessible. Firmware is still restricted to dealers only.

Or if you are talking about the support site for firmware it is not yet posted onto that site, only the main site and only with dealer credentials.

I know of the issues in the past when DSP code was hacked but maybe it is time for Meridian to make firmware updates like this publicly available?

I cannot speak for them. Anymore. smile

But I seriously doubt that will happen. The amount of time spent on tech support calls went down drastically when the conversion to dealers only having access to the firmware.

Think when it was public, more than 15 hours of tech time per day to less than 3. Also made it necessary for the dealers to interact with the customers rather than just delivering a box and telling the customer to call Meridian for setup help if the customer did not want to pay for installation services...

Not saying it is perfect, but it is much better.

Thanks for the details, still think there has to be a better way, an update OTA like Sooloos maybe?

As long as there is an appropriate PC onsite with connectivity to the component, it can be done via remote session. It is a little fiddly but works.

Rightly or wrongly in today’s ‘instant’ world that approach equals customers going elsewhere.

I agree. Apple apps have to be 64-bit from this summer. Most PCs are now 64-bit. In over 20 years since I first bought M kit they still have no Apple-friendly MConfig and that is not good enough in the modern world.

I appreciate that they were wary of being reverse-engineered but at this stage they are so far behind the curve (in all but sound quality) I don't think it would be much of a problem anymore.

Back in the day, experienced users were entrusted with beta testing firmware which led to better, more reliable releases and would have saved us all a lot of bother with the shipped firmware.

Hi Bruce,

Would you, or any of those who have updated the firmware, be able to provide the firmware version number so I can see if my UHD722, which just arrived, has been updated or not?

If you are able to PM me a copy of that firmware, that would be awesome, as my own dealer is temporarily unavailable.

Regards,
Wayne
