Hello, I’ve been lurking in the forum for a while and considered a few amps and used it mainly as a classifieds rather than anything else. I accidentally just bought some new gear and was hoping to get some advice.

My current setup includes a Meridian G55 connected to an Oppo 105D as a pre amp and then Focal 826VW’s, 807 VW’s, CC800VW and a Rel T9 sub. I’m sure it’s not at its optimum set up but one of the very annoying things was the volume control with the Oppo as it didn’t seem linear. Volume 50 would be great for watching TV but Volume 1 for listening to background music was always too loud.

We also have a Xbox 360, Xbox One, Apple TV & Mac Mini and Wii connected which is a pain as I can only connect one device to the Oppo and a few to the TV so I’ve considered a HD621 on & off for a while. I also have another set of Focal SR800VW surround speakers which are still boxed & never been touched.

Yesterday I found a complete set of Meridian gear for sale & won it. So now I have another G55, G57, G68 and HD621 winging its way over. So figuring with this, I can now connect everything to the HD621, connect the G68 so the sound will be easier to control and hopefully sound better? If I can get away with it, from the wife, the surround speakers can also go up and then have another amp powering them.

From what I can see, the auction was in the US, the HD621 and G68 will work fine here in Hong Kong as the voltage seems to be sorted straight away. The two amps will need a 110v input (I have an external transformer) and in time can always get the internal transformers changed. Is this correct?

How would you go about connecting the stuff and setting it up so it sounds great? Sorry if that sounds like a very newbie question but whilst I’ve had my gear for a while I’m sure it could be tuned to sound much better.

Thanks, Nick

Nick,

Welcome to the forum. Which version of the G68 did you buy?

You can see the different sorts here.

It looks like you're thinking of moving from a 5.1 set up to a 7.1 setup? The G68 will only mix the sides and rears, unlike the 861v6 (or v8) which can use true 7.1 material. I don't think this should really be an issue though.

Hey Dominic,

I think for now we’ll probably stick with 5.1 (I’d love to get the sides up but think the wife won’t be happy but its definitrly the long term plan. Presumably the G68 will be good for 5.1 - i’d love to get a 861 at some point & that was what I was looking for ... this came up and seemed silly to ignore!

It seems to be the G68XXV ... is it easy to refurbish the top of an amp? I’ll try to drop in some pictures.

Is it easy to set up? Would it be worth getting someone round to do it professionally?

Is the HD621 good? Reading all sorts about the UHD722 but we don’t have a 4K TV or many 4K inputs yet.

Thanks,
Nick

Don’t bother with the top of the amp. You won’t see it in a dark room with the TV on.

XXV is good. You’ll want 5 balanced cables to go between the XXV and the G55.

The HD621 is good. You’re right, you don’t need the UHD722.

You’ll need 3x digital SPDIF cables to go from the HD621 and the G68, and you’ll want a Comms cable to go between the two as well. BNC is great for this.

To set up the two units you’ll need to run the config programme. For this you will want a null modem cable to whatever your PC can deliver (RS232 or USB). What connectors does your PC have? I presume you can run Windows?

I would sell the other kit you are getting, but YMMV.

Thanks, that’s what I was figuring but I also figured I could maybe spray it myself?!

Ok, I’ll get 5 balanced cables - just using phone cables at the moment. Does it make a big difference?

A comms cable is included. I only have a MacBook & iMac so not sure how I’m going to configure it? Is there any option to do it with a Mac?

I was considering keeping it for another room or maybe sticking it up for sale & seeing what happened. Some of the prices here in Hong Kong are crazy!! We’ll see

Thanks,

Nick

So a SPDIF is just an optical cable right? If so, I have a few! Also need to get some BNC cables

Any recommendations? I was thinking maybe Mark Grant cables?

Also, the G55 & G57 won’t work with a step down transformer or the transformers changed.... what about the HD621 or G68 presumably they’ll just work? Do I need to make any changes or swap fuses or anything?

Thanks,

Nick

Pretty sure you have 240v in HK. The kit will state on the back what power supply is required. Coming from the States it will most likely be 110v. You need the right voltage going into the various kit or it will blow up.
Have a look at VMware fusion or parallel. These programs will allow you to run Windows on your Mac kit for using the config program.

If you just need windows temporarily then I use boot camp, just download Windows from Microsoft and install it will work fine without the licence key.

Definitely worth having a look at Duncan’s Meridian info at the top of the page. Instruction manuals for all of you kit will be there to familiarise yourself with it before it arrives.

Sorry, I didn’t make it clear. Three digital coax cables (electrical not optical) will connect the HD621 to the G68.

You need a single BNC cable for comms between the HD621 and the G68. Don’t spend any more than you have to on this, it just needs to conduct. Since you say it’s coming with a comms cable there’s no need for an extra one.

The HD621 and G68 have universal power supplies according the Duncs’ site.
