What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to play 5.1 SACD through a 861?
Thanks in advance.

Not sure theres a 'cheap' way.

Maybe buy a secondhand Oppo eg 83,93 and take the digital output from that into the 861.

But secondhand spinners are a weaklink in the chain (my old 93 died after about 5 years).

I agree with Greg, an Oppo player would do it. If you want it to be analogue from the Oppo, then a 95, 105 or the new 205.

If you want to keep it digital into the 861, then an Oppo 93 or 103 with either the Vanity Lite or Vanity HD board installed.

These boards are a very straightforward drop in replacement for the Oppo's existing analogue output board. They both convert DSD to PCM and send this out over 3x RCA SPDIF cables to the MC input of your 861. The HD version of the vanity board is a step up in sound quality from the 'lite' version.

Cheers

Please be aware, with my Oppo’s, I can only get digital output from a SACD source via HDMI, hence my need for a HD621.

Yes, that's the case unless the aftermarket vanity board is fitted.

Based on the prices of Oppos with vanity boards installed, a used HD621 is or will be cheaper soon. The lite version is no longer sold. A used Oppo with a new vanity board would be more than a used HD621 today I think. A 203 With a new vanity board might be more than the M replacement for all I know. My gut say it would be.

I think you are probably right! A 203 over here is around £600 and I'd expect the current Vanity HD board to be around £800, so unless the OP can find a used player with it already installed, a used HD621 may be less expensive.

Not sure what the OP is actually asking about but presumably the cheapest way is to feed a 6 channel (5.1) analog output from a SACD player into the 6-channel analog input on a 861.

1)oppo93+vanity 93 lite
2)oppo93+IA45
3)any BD player+HD621
I think the price for above 3options should be almost same.

It has to be said, none of these options are particularly cheap, though.

I guess it depends how many sacds the OP has, but I personally wouldnt lay out this amount of cash on a dead technology, unless I wanted the Oppo for other purposes, like watching blu rays.

Cheers
Greg

Edit: I just noticed the user name and the 519 in his sig. Probably no need for a Bluray player!

Seem to remember the early PS3 would play SACD (they were a very good Blu-Ray player) probably pick one up very cheap but do check if they did (only some versions i think)

Not as cheap as you think, as the early PS3 also was able to be hacked to rip SACDs.

Price probably fell after the Oppo / Pioneer SACD ripping hack was discovered.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.
