Looks like you have a DSL-710A with the LO13 drive firmware.

Out of curiosity, I tried this on two different 596s I have. (One of them failed to recognise a specific CD earlier this evening, so I'm trying to work out what to do about that).

first 596 (office):
596 1.89.2
Drive LV18
DVS-LDR DSL
LDR DSL-720

second 596:
596 189.2
Drive LT76
DVS-LDR DSL
LDR DSL-710

It was the DSL-720 that caught my eye. Was there another model of drive that Meridian used in these players?

I remember that there was a firmware update that was deemed non essential some time ago. I believe I updated mine at the time anyway to the 720. I expect many owners did not.

They seem to have used DSL-710, DSL-720 and the DRL-200 drives. They are interchangeable.

To user the DRL-200, you need to have installed the 1.89.2 firmware, which you have.

I have a similar problem with this machine only bought it last week and it played for an hour perfectly last evening then this morning it isn’t playing ball - last evening it played flawlessly with a single error and today it won’t play anything.

I have read old posts about the drives in this machine and people seem to be saying you can replace the drive with the DVD rom drives. Please excuse my ignorance but a standard DVD ROM is rectangular in shape and these look completely different?

Can anyone suggest a cheap drive I can buy to replace the following?

I’ve only just bought it as well off of gumtree - allegedly unused in a loft!!! , an amazing find which had never seen a disc in original box complete!!!. Came in a cheap banana box with bin liners for company and no protection. When pressing display in standby all I get is 1.21 and in information in the menu I get:

Firmware - 1.21
Microcode - W-2411
Drive Data DVS-LDR DSL - 710A
LT32

I’d love to get it working again it sounded really great for an hour last evening!

As per my previous post, there are only three drives which are guaranteed to work. Those are the DSL-710, DSL-720 and the DRL-200 drives.

When I went though this process, I searched this site and could not find a definitive answer to which other standard DVD drives worked from PATA to SATA with converters. Different people had different levels of success and some solutions required brackets to be made or the 596/8 to be altered.

Last time I checked, Meridian had limited stock of the drives available.

I would recommend that you update the firmware first as the DRL-200 will only work with the latest firmware.

I have looked at DSL-710 drives on eBay which match mine but are on firmware FT 7.9 my current FW is 7.32 would the drive firmware make this I’m compatible perhaps?.

If I get my machine updated to the firmware 1.89 would that increase the FW version of the FT to be compatible. Can’t believe I bought a DVD player and only had it running for two CDs - that’s £100 a disc!!.

The Meridian firmware does not update the drive firmware.

There was a thread about drive firmware I'll see if I can find it.

I'm aware that not all drive firmware will work even for the correct drive model.

So the firmware of the DVD ROM drive is stored on the drive itself possibly. Does that mean I can install the same drive but with newer drive firmware if for example I stay on Meridian firmware 1.21 on the machine itself?

I guess what I’m asking is will Meridian firmware 1.3 allow a ROM drive running 7.9 like it currently allowed the factory fitted 7.32 ROM drive?

Thanks again.

Yes the DVD ROM firmware is on the drive electronics and is no way related to the Meridian firmware.

As previously mentioned, I would update the Meridian firmware to the latest version.

I think your factory fitted drive has a later revision of firmware (7.32) than the one you are looking at (7.9)

If you are buying from anyone other than Meridian via a PP, then there is always a risk that the drive will not work.

If the drive is still physically intact (i.e. powers up), then it can be connected to a PC, where there are utilities to find and download the firmware from the faulty drive. This downloaded firmware can then be uploaded to the new drive.

Now, all this is good in principle, assuming that there are no hardware modifications that depend on the different firmware.

What I would do, would be to download the firmware from both drives, so in case there were problems, the firmware could be put back onto the drive.

Of course all this assumes that you know a little about PCs and have an older PC with IDE interface to connect to the DVD drives.

I've kept a copy of the firmware from my old Meridian 800 DSL-710 drive in case I ever source another working drive.

Can I ask what the piece of software is that will extract the firmware for safe keeping please?

I had a very late night formatting a Dell mini desktop I’ve had for a while for Windows 7, installed the Meridian Flash tool and awaiting this Null modem cable ordered last evening (If anyone would have told me last week I would be doing all this after buying this machine) I’d probably have not bought it! But it does look the part even though it’s doing zilch.

The drive replacements are quite expensive I’ve found those folks who sell them on the auction site must have realised that Meridian fans are buying them and increased prices as a result.
